Smaller, but still with 1,440,000-dot 1.4x EVF, and 3" swivel screen, nice.

AF/AEL and DOF preview buttons are gone! No more EVF/LCD auto-switching. Will 2 Fn buttons make up for lost controls?

Where did you get that information? IQ is the most important thing everstill so I'll await reviews. But not the one of this site after the last experience with the GH2.

EF/AEL can be probably set to one of the two function buttons, but no auto EVF/LCD switching is quite a big drawback.

About the G3, according to Panasonic:
"no interchangeable lens camera has a faster AF."
Can't wait to see that!

EVF LCD switch loss to me is much more "interesting" than fast AF. I have a G1 and never had a complaint. Losing the switch is virtually a dealbreaker for me.

More I think about this I came to conclusion that it may not be such a big deal.
I'm using almost always EVF with G1 so I can press the button to switch.
Price looks fine, and it seems to be nice, small camera.

Of course if DR and noise is better than G1/2. I don't really care about higher res.

The "switch" that has gone missing is the auto detection sensor.

Other than that... and the AEL missing (never was satisfied with the "lock" rather than "AF-on" of other brands), this looks like the GF1 with built-in-EVF we have been waiting for. A little further to the left, and it would have been right about perfect.

I don't like the fact that it has less buttons over my G2, but the improved speed and better sensor(yet to be seen) may more than likely make up for that. Plus, its more compact, and still has both an EVF & articulating screen, which is a bonus for me. If the price for the body drops down to $300 or less I may get one.

I want more info but good
In reply to Mk7, May 12, 2011

Looks like what I want almost. Probably will get one honestly, unless the camera turns out to be rubbish. Has the bits I want and few things I don't on it.

I expect dpreview to give a preview today and then have to wait 6 months for a full review...

It looks to check the important boxes from my other day post:
EVF
Click control wheel
New presumable better sensor
Keep it small (It appears to be 116 mm long)
Still has mode dial

From the images I have seen we have

PASM SCN, an on off toggle on top. Perfect.
Stereo mic (I don't care)
Pop up flash
Ai button on top
Movie on the back.
The standard click control wheel + nav buttons.
No doubt the screen is touch based.

It all looks very solid assuming the EVF is as good or better than the old Gx series, it seems to be what I wanted more or less.

Good image gallery of it

I like the GF1 comparison shots a lot... Very helpful. My conclusion is if you have a GF1 and want an EVF this is basically the size of a GF1 with the big same size EVF as the G2 glued on top. The proportions are a bit odd.

Other item I note: very small battery volume which likely means very small battery capacity. Certainly a downside.

The reduction in grip size is rather irrelevant with a lens mounted.

I am curious on the mass of the new model though. Probably less heavy than a G2.

Thanks Panasonic! Just what is needed: smaller form with built in EVF.

Now lets hope the newer sensor works out o.k.

It's so small, EVF/flash hump looks almost disproportionate. Future versions can't get much shorter without moving EVF to the left of LCD screen.
Touchscreen is the future...?

Absolute thumbs up from me. As someone who requires an EVF of some kind, this is actually the smallest M43 camera to date (when factoring in the 'plug in' EVF you have to add to the GF1/2 or PEN).

Don't care about the DSLR styling vs. Rangefinder styling. A good camera is a good camera, regardless of shape.

Also, the UK press release seems to imply an aluminium chassis, not a plastic one (a la the GF1). A really, really nice touch if true.

Recently, I have been terrified about losing my GF1, as the GF2 didn't look like a reasonable substitute. Not so worried now

G1 comparison - image plane
In reply to drwho9437, May 12, 2011

Also I not in terms of pocket size this isn't a huge leap forward over the G1/G2 because that chunky EVF (while i want a good EVF chunky is not desired).

What I do to compare models is align the focal plane marks. If you do that you see the G3 is less long (like the GF2 was less long than the GF1), but that the backward projection from the image plane is identical to the G2/G1. This means with a lens that must be referenced to this image plane the front to back distance of the camera is unchanged.

Making a camera smaller in your pocket is mostly about pushing the image plane closer to the back of the camera. Probably they did not want major redesigns of those assemblies (IE the EVF assembly was reused and the sensor/shutter was just tweaked).

This means we sadly have a smaller, lower mass (presumably) camera, with a better sensor (presumably), but worse battery life and no better at fitting in your pocket.
