Samyang 6mm is a really good lens. I don't own it cause I have no need for such, but I heard many very good opinions about it from my fellows.

It kinda broke the common-ground on unreasonably high pricing for these lenses from any producer - now at least there is some choice and almost everyone can own and shoot fisheye - which is a really great thing.

It needs pointing out to the unwary that this is a half-frame lens.

Just ordered mine too, I already have a Tamron 10-24 but had always also wanted a fisheye for those times where the distorted look is welcome. So there we are!

The only thing is that I'd have rather wanted something a little less wide like 12mm, but I guess I can just crop. There's not much to choose from in the fisheye class apart from 8 or 16mm.

Hmm, wouldn't it be true to say that it's actually full frame too?

A 8mm fisheye on APS-C is a diagonal fisheye, i.e. the sensor just fits in the 180° image circle. A 8mm fisheye on FF is a circular fisheye anyway, i.e. the image circle is entirely framed by the sensor, the rest of the frame being dark. So if it can do one, it can do the other...

The result is of course not the same, but it does correspond to an usual offering in both cases.

Well, whoever thought bad about Korean quality might be converted after seeing your nice pictures.
Why not buy cheap if it is as good as that?

Re: Chipping The Samyang 8mm
In reply to RobertSigmund, Feb 26, 2011

OK, having placed an order for this lens I am now wondering if it can be chipped to allow the camera to perform exposure compensation and activate SSS.

This site http://eadpt.cn/eadpen.htm has a number of different parts for sale, but I am clueless as to which would be the correct part for this particular lens. The pictures that I have seen of the rear element do not really give any clues as to whether, or not, a chip only solution would physically fit.

Has anyone successfully chipped this lens for Alpha and if so, which part did you purchase?

at this ebay link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pentax-fit-8mm-Fisheye-Lens-Fully-auto-exposure-NEW-/160549854572?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraLensesFilters_JN&hash=item2561845d6c

the person says "This is the latest model, it has the electrical contacts (not normally found on the other Samyang lenses)"

The lens for sale is Pentax mount, does anyone know if there is such an updated version for any other mounts? Samyangs website gives no indication. Then the need for chipping would be moot.

Actually,

By shaving the hood down, this lens works amazingly well on FF cameras.

I hope that one isn't available. Otherwise, my new lens is out of date before I've even received it!

Yikes!...

Chipping it would just take all the fun out of it! For me, the real joy of this lens is having to work just a bit at making your shot; kinda old-school. I like that I have to use my brain a little with this lens. No chip for me!!

I'm perfectly happy with MF, but I don't really want to give up SSS. Also, I'm sure that my A700 is better at calculating exposure than I am

I think that this is probably the correct part http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AF-CONFIRM-CHIP-SONY-ALPHA-MINOLTA-A900-A850-A550-/320553587494?pt=UK_Photography_CameraLenses_Lens_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET&hash=item4aa27b9326 but the question is whether, or not, it will physically fit on the Samyang.

I've messaged that seller (& another seller) a question regarding compatability. I'll post back here if/ when they reply.

Hi Glen.

Thank you very much for the beautiful images and the opinions on the lens. You are really tempting me, I saw the Samyang on ebay for less than 250 Euro.

Ciao

At this wide, I would think you'd have to be shaking like a leaf in a hurricane before it would become noticeable in your shots. I just can't see why SSS would be that necessary with this particular lens. Even at 1/8 second, I have had good results, with no sign of shake in the image... and my hands are far from steady!

Glen is on a sales commision from Samyang.

Judging by the number of "now purchased" & "intending to purchase" comments in this thread, Glen is becoming a rich man!

Ham, my wife just said the very same thing to me when she was reading through this thread! So, I guess I should have become a salesman rather than a boat builder! But I am not so sure whether it's my few sample pics that are doing it, or perhaps people looking up for themselves some reviews for this lens, that has them running for the penny jar!

I'm just praying for another nice day to get back out with it. (snowing like a b*#!% at the moment; can't even see my shoreline!) It's more fun than I have ever had with a new toy before!

You should just go for it. I think some of the nicest pictures are to be had with snow scenes (and much nicer than the rain we're always getting here)

Only trouble is I can't see more than 5 feet past my living room window! Total white-out! Wouldn't make for much of a photo.
