That is wonderful
I have about 45k on mine..
Old girl might out live me...

I bought a second used one with 88k on it and had to retrn it. Shutter was going out on it and the rubber on the hand grip by the shutter was coming loose.
Good thing I dealt with a good Co. Adorama. Refund in bank in a week...
Great customer service and gave me a ups return tag..
I highly recommend them.
I am on the look out for another D200 in better cond:> )))

Mine doesn't even look like I used it..Thats my baby and take very good care of it.

You can see it at work (as a webcam) at

Today is quite cloudy and freezing... The Mont-Blanc will not show up...

Hope you enjoy anyway...

And to think, some people really believe that once a new model replaces the previous, that "old" technology automatically stops working...

...an old dog and no new tricks but it's still a good tool. I don't own a D200 but my D80 (similar ccd sensor) is still a joy to use which gives clean raw files up to iso 400. Having said that I'm sure we will be waxing poetic in 5 yrs about our D300(s)!

What does Nikon spec say on the D200 shutter count?

My D300 already has more than 20000 on it at 1 and half years and the specs count is 150000. Who knows how many it can take.

What if the shutter ages to the point that it stops working while other parts are fine? I don't think it's cost efficient to have the shutter repaced by Nikon considering the expensive labor and new parts fees. Beside by the time the shutter is that old new models would be much better and perhaps not expensive at all.

Do what I did when my D80 suffered mount damage from being dropped... sell the cadaver for parts for $250, then spend it on new technology. At the time, undamaged D80s were going for $400-ish. I described it 100% accurately, told what happened...

That's good to know. My D200 has about 15-20K so she'll be around for many more years to come.

Still working without flaws and no perceptible image degradation. The camera is mounted on the roof and temperature goes from zero degrees (C°) to more than forty between winter and summer.

I will give it back to Nikon for a post mortem examination when time comes. Maybe they wil offer a brand new D800... ;-))

Incredible. I think that's over 3x the official life expectancy for the D200's shutter. Besides the temperature range, has the camera also been exposed to rain/snow up there on the roof?

I wish Nikon was building the D200's quality and durability into their new cameras; I'll just stick with my own D200 (and D50) until they do.

Would love to get a used D200 but the only thing putting me off is the lack of AF fine tune, as I will also be getting a 85mm 1.4.

the camera is below a pane of glass, so no rain or snow but hot and cold through the opening and direct sunlight...

Hopefully these pictures will at some point be useful for meteorological analysis (the Mont-Blanc is 50 km away and the number of days where you can clearly see it seems to go down each year...)

Have you seen the film "Chasing Ice"? Award-winning documentary which chronicles the disappearing glaciers using 27 time-lapsing D200s placed around the world. Another testament to the durability of the D200.

Personally I wouldn't let that stop me. I have a pretty good selection of lenses and they all AF just fine on my D200.

Thanks Moofner for pointing at this spectacular project. I can only imagine the technical and climatic issues these guys had to master...

You're certainly welcome. I haven't seen the documentary yet myself, just knew of it and the filmmaker's use of the D200 in its production. Apparently the film won't be available on DVD until September (just missed a televised broadcast of it on PBS here in the U.S.).

I am happy your camera is solid, but frankly do you even think before pressing the shutter ? What do you do with all these images ?

That is one of the big drawback of digital cameras: too many pictures of poor quality; and I am talking for myself too. In the days of argentic cameras, I would think much more before taking a picture, ask myself if this picture is worth it, maximize the chances of proper exposure,...

Digital mindset is all about quantity, forget about quality. That is a pity.

This is great news.  Last week I picked up a D200 body used, from Adrorama (I love them and I've bought lots of gear from there over the years).  Anyway, my D200 had only 14,800 shutter count and the camera body was in perfect condition.  It is encouraging to hear of the durability of these cameras.  I upgraded from a D70, which was good to me while I had it, but the D200 I now own is a totally different ball game, at least for me.  First, it’s a tank (metal body) and the features are outstanding.

I'm a happy dude!
