A flexible image plane will not only provide optimum focus in the traditional way, it would also allow to focus/defocus each pixel individually. In the first case you have a result as calcualted by Helicon Focus from several images, in the second case you would have a defocus control like Nikon offers in some lenses. Per pixel correction will be much more difficult than a curved alignement of the image plane, but it would be the next step. A general defocus control via alignment would be fairly easy to implement though.
