Does iPad or tablet of any kind have hdmi input ?
Dec 25, 2010

my number one requirement is HDMI input to run as a monitor on a video dslr rig - but also run as a normal tablet for net surfing when I'm not shooting.

Second requirement would be that tablet is wifi or 4g enabled for live streaming to a studio monitor or live streaming to a server over the net. ( think live news crews etc - or private viewing for clients at a wedding reception etc )

Why is it so hard to make one ???

Anyone got any heads up to anything available now or in the works ??

I guess you are just not representing the regular consumer with these needs. Most people are not even interested in such a professional setup, they own a compact camera or wanna edit videos on their smartphone.

The iPad has wifi build in (there is no 4g tablet out there yet I believe) but somebody would have to write applications that suit your needs then. It surely has no HDMI in and will never have one I guess.

I don't think that there is anything that acts as a portable computer as well.

Adapter for the iPad:

That adapter appears to take the video output signal from a Dock Connector, and repackage the signal as a HDMI signal for display on a HDTV.

The OP was interested in HDMI video input. Presumably he wanted to use an iPad as a larger version of a camera's Live View display.

The manufacturer says that it has a "mini HDMI jack", but there's no indication that it is an input jack (like the OP wants). It makes more sense to assume that it is an output jack (for playing back videos on a HDTV when the tablet is at home).

Hi Harry,

Sounds good.. So can you view the live HDMI Feed straight from a canon dslr as your shooting on this mytab for example? And if it can do that - I'm guessing we can program it to record the feed if it can't do that already ???

If it can do that then it'll take over that market for marshal monitor type screens.. It wouldn't be hard after that for someone to code live histograms and focus and zebra strips on blown out highlights etc either ! And conpress to stream to the net..

Hi malcy - yes I've checked out the new 5" marshal here in aust. Guess that's the only option so far. What I was hoping to find is a tablet styled computer like device to mimic them but also offer net connections and possiblity to code the device to add in features like direct net streaming of the feeds etc and use it as a normal tablet for net surfing when not using it as a monitor etc

Like a iPad/wetab/marshal monitor mashup hehe

Smart video monitor
In reply to Rexyinc, Jan 8, 2011

I think this concept is inevitable.
People are paying $350+ for viewfinder loupes right now.
But it seems like one would be better off with the
7" 1080p altona monitor for $355

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=749677&is=REG
Better yet would be some ipad like device with some
programmable intelligence.
With the move to DSLR video, I think we'll see this
sooner than later.

As others have noted, there is no tablet with HDMI input (AFAIK). But, this will get you the monitoring if you will be satisfied by LCD. There might be LED models on the horizon, but at the moment this is what is possible:

$249

http://www.amazon.com/Lilliput-669gl-70np-Monitor-Rechargable-Battery/dp/B0046IMF9Q/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1302647004&sr=1-9 (premade set).

Other model with built in battery 2000mAH:

http://www.amazon.com/Lilliput-668gl-np-Camera-Ypbpr-Battery/dp/B0041I8UAO/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302647790&sr=8-1-fkmr0

Do it yourself pricelist:

Lilliput 7" monitor w/HDMI input: $195
Energizer batt for the monitor $74.88/8000mAH $119.99/18000mAH (sale prices)
1/4 to camera hot shoe adapter: $19.99

The battery for the diy is about double, or quadruple the capacity of the set. At double the capacity for $40 more, I think that its a better deal, plus the energizer can charge your USB stuff.

IMPORTANT: check out the customer reviews on the units, I seem to have read some about impossible to use in sunlight (for the one with built in battery). Search Amazon in general for the models.

A cool addition would be the Brite-View BV-1222 Wireless USD 140 approx, to transfer HDMI signal from the camera to the monitor.

It would look kind of funny though, with the monitor, the receiver and a battery pack all together.

One of the reasons...
In reply to Rexyinc, Apr 28, 2013

And why I wouldn't just want to buy a dummy external monitor, is because NO high resolution (>=1080p) sub-12" stand-alone monitors exist, whereas the Google Nexus is 10.055” @ 2560 x 1600 (300 ppi), and similarly for the iPad.  What a shame and waste not to be able to get video natively via HDMI or Display Port input into a nice high-res tablet.

So the motivation for me is to get both the high resolution, and to couple various mobile apps, or even just a second monitor for the my laptop.  For the last, there are various WiFi screen sharing apps that one can download on laptop (host) and tablet (client), but you potentially introduce resolution loss, and tremendous latency.  For example, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.springdesign.screenshare.browser.client

YES, so I too want HDMI input INTO tablet!  There is no substitute for this capability.

Ask Red. There are in the business of providing small screens for their cameras. Though probably using a proprietary interface protocol.
