Which noise reduction do you use? Topaz DeNoise, Nik Dfine 2 or LR NR

My wife gave me Nik Dfine 2 for Christmas last year but I just use the noise reduction in LR3 because it is easy to get to and seems to work well.
This year I bought her the bundled Topaz package which includes DeNoise.

I'm sure there is a learning curve with each one but do either stand out over what comes with LR3?

I sometimes feel that we become obsessed with noise to the point that we can't enjoy our photos. I use Lightroom 3, having moved up from version 2. I used Noise Ninja for a while, thinking that I was greatly improving my images. But I soon discovered, even with the Lightroom 2, that my prints were just fine using the noise reduction available in Lightroom. Now, with Lightroom 3, the noise reduction and image processing is noticeably better. Personally, I don't have any need for any other noise reduction. But then I don't spend a lot of time looking at my images at 200% magnification either.

«DeNoise», IMO, is presently the best NR software, although the differences in terms of IQ to Noiseware Pro, Noise Ninja, Neat Image or LR3, are very small indeed, and not for all "types" of photos.

On the other hand, LR3 offers besides the (now) excellent NR feature, an integrated photo work flow the other (plug-in or standalone versions) do not offer.

Up to you - and your work flow - to decide, but either way you can't go wrong with any of these excellent products.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Pedro

Big blow-ups aren't the only place noise is a problem. I shoot high school football games and the principal passes the photos out to the players. On our poorly lit field my settings are ISO 6400, 1/400 and f/2.8 on my original D3 and things are still a little underexposed. I would love to jump the ISO up a notch but it would take heroic noise reduction to get a clean shot at that setting.

They are all very good. It is a personal preference. I prefer NIK Dfine but I can't say anything bad about Topaz, Noise Ninja, Neat image etc. Use whichever one you are satisfied with and find easiest to use.

I originally used Define 2.0 but after spending some time shooting low light track & field events at higher ISO I wasn't satisfied with the results. I swiched to DeNoise 5 and have produced better photos. Define 2.0 is a good program, but in my opinion, DeNoise 5 handles higher levels of noise better.

I use Denoise, but the other day I watched a demonstration of Nik Dfine and you can easily define (mask) where the noise reduction is to be applied (like only to the sky) from within Dfine. In PS I would have to define a mask, which is not hard, but if you already own Dfine, you might want to experiment with that. I've also switched mostly to LR's noise reduction since LR3, but for more serious noise, or masking issues, I go to Denoise.

The standalone program does not work on X64 to the best of my knowledge. A big negative for otherwise fantastic program for batch processing.

I recently tried the trial version of Topaz DN 5 but kept on getting error messages so I gave up. I am using PS on an old 1GB AMD 3000+ computer but it works OK with other DN programs.
