Does the GF1 work with a Pana 14-42mm g Vario
Dec 15, 2010

Dear all,

I am considering to buy a GF1 and found some offers on Ebay, selling the body with a Panasonic G Vario 14-42mm O.I.S. instead of the KIT lens 14-45.

I already found out some differences between the two lenses (e.g. the 14-42 seems to have a plastic instead of metal bayonet (which I wouldn't care for, as I wouldn't switch lenses that often).

The 14-42 doesn't have a O.I.S. on/off switch on it, is that a problem?

and: does the lens fit the GF1 good? The 14-42 is the kit lens for the G- not the GF-series, as far as I can see. And divers tests show that image quality is not that much of a difference.

The offers with 14-42mm are all cheaper than with the 14-45mm...

Many thanks for your help
Best
Peter

HI Peter

The 14-45 was the first m4/3 kit lens Panasonic manufactured. Its typically found as the kit lens for G1, GF1 . Since the G2 was launched, they replaced that with the cheaper (and some say not as good IQlens) the 14-42.

THe 14-42 has OIS built in. Just that its not like the 14-45 where there's a swich on the lens. The 14-42's IS is activated from the camera's setup menu.

Since this 14-42 is a native m4/3 lens by Panasonic, it works fine on the GF-1. Not sure why you would want to use this rather than the 14-45 though as most reviews (including this site) says that the 14-45 is better..

check out the G2 review where they talk a bit more on this lens.

Hi Winston,

thank you for the quick answer. Maybe I have to look a bit deeper in the lens comparison, I just found one German review saying that the difference is minimal.

There is a price difference of about 50€ (which is approx. 65$) so it seemed logical to take the 14-42 if it was almost as good as the 14-45.

But I will check the lens reviews a bit better...

Thank you, best
Peter

I just see that the upcoming GF2 will come with the 14-42mm... is that the same kit-lens as with the G-series? Seems so...

Yep.. seems so. Panasonic only has the 2 kit lens.

I have a G2 with the 14-42. Never had a chance to try the 14-45 and I shoot for fun and family moments. So far no issues with the 14-42 except some softness when its wide end 28mm (35mm equvalent). Totally acceptable to me.

I guess if its $65 difference between almost 2 equivalent lens, then maybe you should try it out at a retailer? Again.. reviews are reviews. I'm not a pixel peeper so I'm contented with my 14-42.

I did a fast search.. actually most of the Panny G and Oly Pen discussions (i.e. m4/3) are all at the Micro Four Thirds forum.. not so much this Panasonic forum.. you might want to drop by for a visit.. I frequent both forums because I have 2 Panasonic P&S and a G2 m4/3 camera.

There was a forum thread sometime ago on this exact same question.. you might want to check this out :

Happy Shooting.. whichever lens you buy !
