Canon 60D deal at Ryther Camera - Reputable seller?
Dec 14, 2010

Hi,

I found the 60D body for $849 at Ryther Camera ( http://www.rythercamera.com/catalog/product_info.php?csv=bz&products_id=30833 ).

Is that a reputable store? It's one of the lower prices I've seen online so far.

The ResellerRatings page looks good... http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Ryther_Camera

Thanks.

I'm skeptical. The history is short and some of those reviews smell self-written.

The offer of "import model" with an "upgrade" to a "US model" concerns me. As does the upgrading of the memory and the warranty (from whom? I don't for a moment think it was the camera manufacturer!). As does the wild speculation about battery life with the original copy. No decent manufacturer ships cameras with lousy batteries.

An over-dependence on packages sold on the "confirmation call" as a great deal is another red flag.

Modified reviews tell me that the retailer is paying attention to the site and wants to get good reviews. When about one out of five is modified, that tells me that there is a pattern of the retailer telling customers that they won't get taken care of unless they fix their review.

Nothing here looks good to me except the score. And that looks very manipulated.

I wouldn't buy from anyone with any less than 750 responses: it's too easy to manipulate the stats on small(er) samples.

ebay rating is 99.1% and they look legit: http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=rythercamera&ftab=AllFeedback

...I have never used them but looking at their ebay ratings I'd place a bid.

BTW, I do not see them listed as an authorised dealer: http://www.usa.canon.com/CUSA/assets/app/pdf/dealer/CanonAuthorizedDealers.pdf

...so no idea what the warranty is or if they sell grey market. Here is there sales policy: http://www.rythercamera.com/catalog/company_policy.php?osCsid=b8ea1c775ab0c3bafcd82928d763e080

Is it worth the risk of major hassle to save 50 bucks?

Be smart.

Run the other way !

This is typical bait and switch BS. No way I'd ever deal with any merchant using these tactics. When they start talking about upgrading memory cards, or batteries, or warranty, it's all lies and BS. No Canon DSLR camera includes a memory card, and they all have the same canon OEM battery, and the exact same warranty. They are not telling the truth if they talk about upgrading any of these things.

What they are probably doing is removing the genuine Canon battery from the package and substituting a cheap aftermarket battery, then trying to get you to pay extra to get the battery that normally comes with the camera. Don't get sucked in. You will end up paying a lot more than you would have from a reputable dealer. If you agree to purchase a package from them including memory cards and/or batteries, you are likely to get the cheapest garbage memory and battery available.

I can almost guarantee you that you will be sorry if you order from a merchant who does this. By creating a bogus package deal, with supposed upgrades that are NOT upgrades to anything, they are scamming customers.

There is a good reason why some sellers are NOT authorized Canon dealers.

Some sellers do this crap and once they have your credit card, they will not even talk to you when you decide you want to cancel your order or get a refund. Life is too short to deal with scammers.

The fact that they only have 48 reviews in the last 12 months means they are NOT really selling anything. Most of those reviews are probably written by the seller.

Don't be a victim !

Run the other way !

Just to let you know of my experience because I wouldn't want the same thing to anyone else...

I bought a body only Nikon D7000 kit from Ryther Camera. A salesman named David Brennan called the next day and swindled me on "upgrading my accessories", when they came with the kit anyways. I should have only payed retail price of $1199 for body and accessories. They upgraded my shipping (big deal, $10-$15 dollars there) and sold me a Mack camera plan which after I got it, I realized it only cost 60-90 dollars (Mack service plan no. 1202). But my total price was $1449. I have filed with the BBB for what good that will do but I consider it a loss. If you are in a hurry for equipment not readily found, roll the dice, but be prepared to pay the price.

To MEL:

Im afraid they sell gray market cameras as USA cameras, this jeopardizes the warranty!!

Was your d7000 was for Nikon USA or Gray Market??
Were you able to register the camera through Nikon?
Did you found the stiker in the battery are saying USA???
