Tamron 28-75 2.8.
A great sharp lens, good for portaits. not to serious architecture, landscape.
Not great for real tele, or real wide shots (like in a small room)...

I was going to say the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 as that's my main lens, but given the improved sensor in the A55 compared to my A200 i'd say the CZ16-80.

If video matters, I'd go for a Sigma OS HSM lens like the 17-50, 17-70, or 18-250. I picked the 17-70, but I'll be adding a telephoto lens on top of it.

You're right, he said forget the cost
That is the best super lens you can get (esp when you only can choose one)

I would go with the SAL-18250.

Runners up:

  • CZ 16-80: very good, but a little short

  • Sigma 50-150: great range, but a little long

  • Tamron 70-200: awesome lens, but quite long

Totally agree. If you shoot video regularly and use the built-in mic, you need a Sigma HSM lens with the nice and quiet ultrasonic AF motors. The 17-70/2.8-4 OS HSM is probably the best choice given that the 17-50/2.8 is not great wide open anyways. And if you're going to stop down anyways, you might as well get the 17-70.

Sony SAM lenses generally have noisy AF motors and Tamron lenses are usually screw-drive lenses using the noisy in-body AF motor.

It depends on what you want if you want to stay with SONY ONLY products or are willing to try Tamron, Sigma, etc lenses.

Personally I would go with the Sony 18-250mm (review: http://kurtmunger.com/sony_dt_18_250mm_f_3_5_6_3id175.html ) as a good general purpose lense over the Tamron (less money, basically same) or the Sigma (heavier, bulkier, cheaper, quality perhaps a tad better).

But if 6.6X zoom is enough I would go with the Sony 16-105 mm which has nearly the same quality as the more expensive Carl Scheiss 18-80 lens. (review: http://kurtmunger.com/sony_dt_16_105mm_f_3_5_5_6_reviewid220.html )

And if you want a good wide angle lens try the Tamron 10-24 which good good reviews at dpreview (I have one, very happy with it).

And if you want really really far reaching zoom go with the new Sigma 50-500 which is 75-750mm when fitted to the Sony A55/33. Combined with a 2x Teleconverter that gives you 150-1500 reach which if you have a Tamron 10-24 and a Sony 18-250 in your collection of lense that gives basically a 10-1500 mm reach wide and zoom or 150X optical zoom!!

The Sigma 50-500 can be found on the street for about $1250 and it will set you back a bunch but if your into nature shots it's a must have.

No love for the SAL16105? That's been my primary lens for the past year or so now, and I'm a fan of it. 24-70 is just too small of a range for me...

The only problem I have with the 16-105 though is that it's slooooooow.....f/4 at 18mm, f/4.5 at 24 or so. Still plenty sharp though.

What about Sigma 18-250?
In reply to NeilJones, Oct 8, 2010

I just ordered this lens from B&H. I picked this lens due to the wide zoom range and good reviews. Will this work with the A55? I heard someone mentioned it needed to be "fixed" before it can be used with the SLT cameras. What does this mean?

That sucks. Do you think it's worth the hassle or should I exchange it for the Sony 18-250?

Sounds like a hassle. If it were me I'd exchange it.

In fact I did just that last week when I ordered a 70-200 I originally got the Sigma without thinking - just because of the HSM. But after I placed the order (1-day shipping w/Amazon Prime) I decided to do the Tamron instead. I simply refused the package and it went back to Amazon unopened for refund.

I have the SAL 18-250 and I doubt the Sigma can best it so I'd say just send it back.

I vote the Sony 18-250. Incredible range and very good image quality. Not on par with the faster shorter range zooms, but very good.

Get an 11-18 to go with it and you have most possibilities covered.
