Canon takes over DPR with barnum advertising
Sep 22, 2010
|
Canon takes over DPR (or so it seems at last, judging from the background colour of the site) with a barnum ad for a "novelty" in EOS cameras (first time ever in the 60D), that I have been enjoying for almost three years already with my E-3 : the 270° swivel screen.
What's your angle?
Mine is that this has been done before, like also an efficient dustbuster, like also live view in an SLR, like also creative filters, like also the mirrorless EVIL, like also IBIS, like also...

Canon pays for every minute of advertising. If Olympus, Panasonic or Nikon pays them, then you'll see products from those companys also.
but it appears that they don't need dpreview for advertising. is just that simple.

since it needs this campaign, not to get drowned in the elsewhere Photokina noise.
In my opinion, it's a mediocer successor to the 40D via the 50D. I rather look elsewhere....

Gidday Roel & All
Methinks that for all the hyperbole and angst here about the D7000 and the E-5, the "natural enemies" of the D7000 and the 60D are each other ... Not the E-5.
And it does seem that the D7000 is rather well ahead on points at this stage, IMHO ...
This rather than the E-5, which is, and always was, going to be a niche product (for the cognoscenti - ROTFLMHO! ... ). You know, for us Olympus Outcasts .

I don't have a problem with Canon advertising, nor with DPR getting paid for advertising. And sure, Olympus could spend the cash too. (Although it still is a bit overwhelming : the whole background of the site seems a bit much. And it is not ideal for viewing pictures and samples : the quiet dark grey is better as background than screaming red)
The only main thing I was saying is that the big novelty that is now being advertised, may be great news for Canon, but it is old news for Olympus users.

Hi John
I agree with you on this one. A brief peruse of the canon forum would suggest the 60D is unpopular and the canon users feel the D7000 is the "enemy" to this and possibly the 7D. Few mentions that I've seen of the E5, presumably because they are all in awe of it and have been struck speechless or they realise that it is a real photography tool that they can only aspire to.
Cheers

I would say this advertisement will get next no one of the typical vistior of this site to actually consider this camera, which would not have already done so.
The money they waste here will not be spend on R&D.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing. I was about to start a thread with this subject:
"... WITH 270-DEGREE SWIVEL 3.0' LCD SCREEN ..."
I was talking to a friend the other day about Olympus and that it is a small camera company comparing to giants with the guts to create a new digital protocol (4/3) instead of doing what every one else did and introduce new technologies like anti-dust, Live View, IS, Swivel Screen, Mirror Less camera and more. I like my Olympus camera not because it produce the best image quality comparing to others. I like it because I agree with their philosophy and I enjoy being part of it using their products. I also believe that mirrorless is going to change our way of capturing the moment sooner or later ...

Other than our pet serial trolls, I don't think the average Canon or Nikon user knows or cares that Olympus exists - that's the reality!

Well, I am right in the middle of packing.
But I can't go cold turkey on DPR while there is still a computer around.
I am actually at my day job's office right now, and pinching 5 minutes here and there.
The packing, in case you are interested, is quite a task actually.
I have decided to take two full set-ups with me, with which I can do the job, independent of the other set-up. Just hedging my bets in case one of my cases gets lost or stolen. I need to be able to function with the other.
My carry on backpack will contain (JUST within 10 kg limits):
E-3
ZD7-14, PL25, ZD35-100, ZD150, FL50R + cards, batteries, charger, ...
In my checked luggage cheap-looking suitcase, I will have a shockproof and watertight box (type Pelican) with :
second E-3 (the one on loan) + LX3 (to walk around at night)
ZD8mm, ZD12-60, ZD50 and EX-25, ZD 50-200, FL36R
Also in that case : monopod head, backup HD (Hyperdrive album : backs up CF cards automatically without need of computer, and contains software to view RAW files), charger, cards, batteries.
Also in the suitcase : large collapsible reflector/diffusor, monopod
For the trip back, I will carry my full CF cards on my body, and have backed-up images on the Hyperdrive Album to have one copy of everything in separate places.
I had thought about moving the on-loan 12-60 to my main gear bag, but that would leave the second set-up with too large gaps between 8mm, 25mm and 50mm.
If I have all of that packed (with copies of invoices for customs), my suitcase has just enough room left for a toothbrush and some shorts and T-shirts and one extra pair of shoes. I won't be entering a beauty contest over there , I am sure.

is going to feature their "unique" dustbuster and instead of the overwhelming red colour, it's going to shake the computer screen of anyone connecting to the DPR website.
Now THAT's a wonderful advertising idea, isn't it ?

I believe some Canon cameras have the ability to pixel map away hot pixels.
This was mentioned in a forum a while back. It is a multi step thing - like looking up the number of shutter actuations.
Olympus has had this in their cameras for years - as a simple menu item.
I use pixel mapping before any big vacation when the camera will be getting a work-out.

Best of luck (I am sure you won't need it ... ).
As I said to someone else - Be prepared ... ;). Seems to me that you are ...
