I don't know much about this area, but here are some uneducated guesses.

In principle it should be possible to fit many still photography lenses, e.g. film SLR lenses, 35mm rangefinder camera lenses and full frame and APS-C DSLR lenses. These will all need adaptors and the only one so far announced is for Sony A lenses.

Some (all?) of these lenses with adaptors may not autofocus.

Lenses designed for cameras with smaller sensors, including camcorders, CCTV cameras, Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds lenses probably won't be capable of producing an image circle large enough to cover the NEX-3/5 APS-C sensor and therefore won't be usable.

You can probably get an idea of what may be possible by looking at the adaptors available for Four Thirds cameras, e.g.:

The only lenses the NEX system takes natively are the e-mount lenses. There is an adapter for Alpha lenses, and 2 Sony attachments for the 16mm.

I assume there are current screw-on adapter lenses that would work, and if not there probably will be shortly, but the quality of these will essentially disregard the reason most buy the camera; for easy use and good quality images.

thank you guys, I was thinking in buying something like this :

http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/lens/g_20.html

even if not from panasonic, I need a sandwich lens very good in low light and with autofocus.

Do you know if :

  • this lens can mount/screw on any step down lens ring to put on it a 37mm lens ?

  • does thislens have image stabilization ?

I do not understand if the NEX-5 comes with image stabilization or not.

I am interested mainly in unsing the NEX-5 for videos....

Thank you again

Probably not at the moment. It almost certain won't autofocus.

Sony EX has a similar lens - 16mm f2.8 pancake. Sony also has adaptors for the lens to turn it into an ultrawide lens or a fisheye.

  • does thislens have image stabilization ?

No - it shows that in the specs.

I do not understand if the NEX-5 comes with image stabilization or not.

Not in-body, but all the lenses announced so far except the 16mm pancake have in-lens IS..

I am interested mainly in unsing the NEX-5 for videos....

Re: Proprietary Mount and modern requirements for AF, EXIF, f/no control
In reply to marcolisi, Aug 21, 2010

As previous poster said, Sony NEX cameras use a new E mount and use E mount lenses. You will find that from the old film days, each maker made proprietary mounts. There were a few brands that had common mounts - for example the M42 screw thread for Pentax, Praktica etc...

In the modern age, not only do we have the mount mechanical fitting but also the electronics communications and motors. This makes it hard for other makers to make a lens to

  • autofocus

  • control f/no

  • send data for EXIF

There are two new Interchangeable Mirrorless Body lines - NEX and Micro Four Thirds. Because these cameras are so thin, it is possible to make mechanical adaptor for many alien lenses and fit them onto these bodies. But they cannot control AF, f/no. Since lenses for NEX and Four Thirds are modern lenses, even if you managed to fit each other's lenses, these lenses have no f/no ring on the lens and since the electronics are different, you can't control the f/no.

For alien lenses on NEX, look for third party - Sony would prefer to sell you new lenses so they are not motivated to fit other brands lenses onto the NEX.

Ebay has the following:

Ask at the Sony NEX forum
In reply to marcolisi, Aug 21, 2010

I don't have a NEX and even if I have a NEX, the adapter is not made by Sony and is not approved by Sony. These adapters are made by other companies and sold on eBay. That lens is also a third party lens.

So all these a specific questions and if there are any NEX owners who know, they will be in the Sony NEX forum

That lens is for a 1/3" sensor
In reply to marcolisi, Aug 22, 2010

That's a video lens that only covers a 1/3" sensor. It's not going to do a very good job of covering the NEX's APS-C sensor; it'll only cover a 6mm circle in the middle of the sensor.

Why not get a video camera like a Cohu that's designed to take that lens? If it's going to be a surveillance camera, it seems like it will be dedicated to that task so why buy something designed for general photography that won't do the job right?

to the Sony NEX forum is the similar way you got to this Beginner's Forum. Up at the top of this screen is Forums link. Also look at the next post below - he says the lens you say, even if it fits, won't cover the APS-C sensor of the NEX.

Thank you for the Cohu/surveillance cameras advice, but the thing is that I thought that Digital Full HD camcorders are in quality much much better than surveillance cameras. Is it true ?

I wish I could find a full HD digital surveillance camera that could record to Hard disk like the panasi=onic hs700 or the sony xr550 do.

This is the reason why I was thinking at using a pinhole adapter on a full hd camcorder.

What do u think ?

Have you seen the SONY NEX-10?

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666239819

Same sensor but in a very seriously HD video targeted camera (around $2,000).

My basic understanding is that all of the NEX devices will 'share' things like lenses, microphone systems, viewfinders, etc.

Because of this you can shoot stills with the NEX-10 although it is functionally targeted for video.

Likewise, the NEX-5 can shoot HD video, although it was targeted at still photographers.

Since you mainly are interested in video, I think you should seriously consider this design factor?
