Quality mirror lenses on the 5D and 5d mk2
May 28, 2010

Over the past few years I collected mirror lenses! - Well 4 anyway!

The Tamron 500mm f8
Nikon 500mm f8
Contax Zeiss Mirotar 500mm f8
Tamron 350mm f5.6

I have finally written up a comparison article with some sample images.
I fitted all of them to my 5D for the tests.

I subsequently sold all but the Zeiss, so have some 5D mk2 exampe images and comments.

See my blog for the full article.

I hope you find this useful.

Note the hotspot problem, subsequently corrected on the lower image, taken with the Nikon 500mm f8

Nice comparison. Thanks for posting

Canon also made a manual focus mirror lens (500mm f/8), and Minolta had an autofocus 500mm f/8. And Nikon made a 1000mm f/11 and a 2000mm f/11. The 2000mm was quite heavy - 17.5 kg (you can google it if you would like some more info on it)

I am quite happy with my Contax Mirotar f:8 that I have from my analog days. Its compact, easy to focus n my 5DII and really gives you reach in bright light.

I've recently acquired an Olymus OM 500 mirror (images)

I bought it to use on my Panasonic G1/GH1 EVIL cameras, but find the equivalent 1000mm (2x crop sensors) very difficult to focus unless the camera is tied down on a sturdy tripod. It is extremely small - even for a mirror, being only 80mm diameter (31/8") by 100mm (4") long I have much more success on my 5DII or 1DIV, shooting from a monopod.

These look good, with the out of focus areas not too distracting.

It is when people shoot birds in trees with lots of twigs in front and behind that mirror lenses look awful for wildlife.

I have now posted images from the Canon 100-400 with 1.4x teleconverter to compare to the mirror lenses - The Zeis is FAR better, and of course MUCH lighter.

l dont know why mirror lenses don't have more fanatics. I've had the Nikon 1000 f11 and also the 500 f8. Both were super lenses. With the right light conditions they are incredibly sharp. In the wrong conditions....not so hot. I sold the 1000 to the owner of the Oakland A's baseball team. One of the coolest ever mirror lenses was the Minolta 250 f5.6. It looked like a 50mm lens. Very cool, and sharp.

I agree, in fact I point this out in my article, but then the Canon 100-400 with 1.4x teleconverter doesn't autofocus unless you have a 1-series body (which can AF at f8) - note the image on my article of a moving skateboarder, and the image from a guy above of an F1 car.

It is possible with the right technique!
