Drove 1 hour passed the police block today, as close to the eruption site of eyjafjallajokull as I dared go. Right after sunset the volcano went berserk, and you really need to be there to understand it. Crazy to say the least. I knew I was way too close, but I think the shots came out nice.

The amount of ash it spewed out today was insane. I don´t think airtraffic will be back on in a while.

Cheers

Wonderful image. How close were you?
I assume those tracer lines are from flying debris... and not from lightening?

wot else can you say, except have you got a few more to share Terje please.

As for the ligthening bolts, these are a frequent occurence during volcanic eruptions. Could I suggest you Google it to find out the mechanics of this phenomenon.

A bit too close to be honest. I drove about 1 hour passed the police block. I wanted to get as close as possible without getting a heart attack. Goal was a 17-20mm wide angle sunset shot of a mirror in the river which turned out great. But then it just went absolutely crazy. I was not sure if I should escape or continue shooting, but I realized I was probably far too close to get away anyway. However the 2-3km lava that shot up landed on the back side of the volcano. I believe I must have been about 4-7km away from the eruption site.

This is taken with 70-200/2.8IS at about 70mm.

I was rewarded last night with a theater that made me shed tears. Money is great and all, but I really just want to share this now. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did last night.

Fantastic photograph, thanks for taking the time to post it. It is among the most impressive images I have seen here at DPR. Definitely try to offer it to a news agency. Good luck and stay safe.
