Softbox for 580EX II - indoor/outdoor set up
Feb 15, 2010

Hello all,

I have watched a video from Joe McNally on one light photography. In fact, he was not using one flash, he used more....but he used same flash and that is why it was called one flash:-)

He is using Nikon.

I was wondering whether you would know what are the good brands and models of light stands for 580 EX II?

I would also want to have a softbox for it - something that I can use indoor and outdoor.

I want to focus on portrait and full person photographs. I am making an assumption that I will need more that one 580 II, at least 2. But.....

If you know, please suggest exact models....

Thanks for your help.

Regards.
Alex.

It is difficult for me to recommend particular brands, because I don’t know what is available to you in your country. A 580ex, even with a softbox, isn’t a heavy piece of lighting gear, so you do not need a very substantial stand. I would still recoemnd an air cushioned stand. Something like this:

Or in non-air cushioned stands, Manfrotto does a good lightweight stand:

…but it only goes up to 2 metres.

If you are using lightweight stands, the you will need many sand/shot bags for outdoor shooting.

I would also want to have a softbox for it - something that I can use indoor and outdoor.

Photoflex does a decent softbox for the price:

… but again I don’t know of the availability in Poland.

I wouldn’t go over 60 x 80 cm with one speedlight. For larger softboxes you would probably need two 580exs, which means a bracket to hold both. Once you get into two speed lights, then it may be less hassle looking at monolights for indoor shooting, or something like the Elinchrom Quadra for outdoors.

You can buy it at Foto-Müller in Austria - my favorite studio-equipment shop here.
He will also send it to poland:

I have the lightdome and it's great for outdoor portraits, as it is very light and easy to setup.

Hi,

I am sure that softbox/stand wise anything that fits nikon will fit canon too. The shoe for flash is standard size for most brands and the only thing thad differs is the connectors, which are not used while triggering the flash manualy anyway. Therefore you can follow Joe's advice if you like.

Besides that I must say that the Apollo softbox from Westcott looks really tempting: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/564656-REG/Westcott_2202_Apollo_Speedlight_Set_.html

I have no idea where I could get one of those in Sweden or to that matter Poland, so can't give you real life experience in using it... Just read quite a few positive reviews about it.

Darn my english accent...

You are right! Though I do live in Sweden these last years...

In any case, buying gear in Lt costs too much, probably simmilar situation to Pl, haven't checked lately...

Did some more browsing now. Westcott page is updated since the last time I was there. They have a UK dealer:

http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/public/view_item_cat.php?catalogue_number=fjwestcott_2334

In the end with the shipping it will turn out being twice US price...

I'll just live with my umbrella for now another 100 years

Cheers!
M.

Outdoors you need to consider wind and any softbox larger than 12 x 12. Check out the Chimera website for quite portable soft boxes and brackets for holding both the softbox and the strobe.
