How to display M8/ M9 shutter actuations ? step by step for Mac users inside
Feb 10, 2010

One of the first things to check is the image count of a pre owned camera.

Leica does not make this as easy as Nikon, as the image count is displayed in hexadecimal value.

As long, as you are not an mathematical genius and convert this value in your head, you can use your Mac, to display a more readable value (any other computer will suffice too with any other method of converting the hexadecimal value into a decimal value for easier display).

I refer only to the software here, that comes free with your Mac (which was my goal to find out).

Steps to display shutter actuations of a Leica DNG file:

  • open image file in Preview.app

  • open inspector

  • mark unique image id value (double click on it)

  • copy unique image id value (cmd + c)

  • open calculator.app (just type "1+1" or any other mathematical formula in spotlight and hit "enter")

  • switch view to "programmer" (cmd + 3)

  • paste hexadecimal value from unique image id into the calculator (cmd + p)

  • switch to decimal system (click the "10 button" on the calculator)

Voila - you now have the actual actuations of your Leica digital M camera!

Great tip. Could this be made into a script?

Ahh Simon - I did not think that far

As only native Mac OS X apps are involved, I am pretty certain it can.
I am not versed with undertaking scripting ;-(

I guess, there are much easier possibilities (using script friendly exiftool and just sticking to commandline programming, rather than using the complicated user interface apps for the work around).

Wow! My "demo" M8.2 apparently had only 100 actuations on it when I bought it.

Thanks for posting this useful tip.

fwiw, on the x1, it does not seem to have a unique image id to check.. or at least I can't find it.

22,794 on my used M8. Thanks, Menos....didn't want to know.
Sigh.

What a great machine, really. In a day and age of disposable materials, to have a digital camera which can last that....wow, and STILL clicking!!

Hi,

Can anyone explain how the number of actuations shown can decrease?

Mine has gone down by around 700 from 1200 to 500.

Seems very strange......

Thanks,

Oliver

Perfect! Thanks for posting the step-by-step directions. Worked like a charm. 8243 actuations this year.

I have seen some pro shooters on Canon get through 100k actuations in a year. 6500 sounds like you have been selective

I like that the counter is hex, but then I'm a computer geek

simple applet that does this
In reply to menos, Mar 26, 2011

and it is free
http://www.soens.de/swpage/swpage.html
from Wolfram Söns who contributes to LUF

works like a charm & gives additional information such as sensor temperature, external sensor brightness & measured LV, though I don't know what use to make of this information

some of the info is not accurate
In reply to Artichoke, Apr 28, 2011

On this app (I tried the mac version), some of the camera data reported are not accurate (f value, exposure, program mode....to name a few). I haven't checked the accuracy of the reported shutter count.
