D700 discontinued ?
Dec 5, 2009

I just walked in to a Dixons at Gatwick airport hoping to by a D700 but was told by the salesman that he had no stock. When he checked the computer for availability he promptly informed me that the d700 is no longer available
and is discontinued.
His system reported no stock in any stores and a
sell price of £0.97 which is some kind of indicator that it is discontinued.
He could not say when a replacement would be announced.

I don't know if it's been discontinued, but I had very similar experiences when buying my D700 in London recently. I was told that nikon uk had no mre stock at the minute. I had to get one from another store.

Love my D700. Can't wait for the replacement which includes vid. The sooner it is discontinued the sooner the new one will be out.

Jessops said they were very difficult to get hold of when I bought in, and they were holding their value (they have not gone down much in price recently).

It made me all the more determined to get one. The D700 may well become a classic, rather like the old 5D did. The new 5D is "better" but actually I prefer the old.

Plus the new D700 will be more expensive. I predict it will be £2,499 or something.

I asked a dealer here in Denmark on September 24th. He told me that the D700 was of status "unable to order".

If they price it that high, then they lose a whole section of the market that wants a D700 replacement, and can't afford the cost of a D3s/x etc.

Nope, they would be crazy to price it that high.

just my 2 cents...

Hopefully it will bring us a D800, 18MP with clean ISO6400 (as in D3/D700), 1080 (24p, 30p) video with good enough autofocus for $3499....

I wouldn't mind a D3S quality D700S with 720p video for $2999 as well.

The earlier the D800/D700S come out and the cheaper it will become by next summer...

This is what I think...... 3499 would be too much for a non pro full sized body camera.

The D700 filled a void and I just can't see nikon going to far up on the pricing if they still want to continue in the slot they are holding now.
Think about it... the D700 is in some what of a unique position.

It is an affordable camera with the D3 FX sensor and image quality. The D700 is allowing nikon the ability to offer the non pro or a pro body user an incredible camera at great pricing, also it is providing an outlet for the FX sensor to go other than the D3 line which means more production of this sensor. This will only help lower the price for future production.

A Refurb D3 just a few months ago was running around 3699.00 and now is running 4000.00+ and still going up.

Soon we will see a number of D3s and D3X refurbs, when they hit the pricing will be right untill the demand drives them up. So the replacement D700 I think will be maybe a D700s to follow inline with its big brother the D3s flagship but with not too much change or price.

Nikon has a great thing going right now and they are on a roll with their line up.
I think they will keep it within reason.

But I still think the D700 will end up being in great demand after it has been discontinued more so than any of the other models because they really hit the mark with this one.

Just curious why you prefer the old 5D? Am considering the new
5D but am undecided.

Can't wait for the new posts about the new Nikon D700 replacement. I can predict the many posts from folks telling us they:
1. Won't be upgrading from their D700, will you?
2. Hate video in their DSLR
3. Its not worth the upgrade.
4. Did they also make sure to fund their IRA account prior to the purchase?

  1. 4 is my addition....

It is said now in Asia the dealers are clearing out the stock. The price is dropping under $2100. They hope the year end sale could increase the sale of D700, because of the blow of 5DII.

Nikon should wake up.

It is quite possible that the next batch of the D700 will actually be D700s. I can see cost reductions in the production in conjunction with the new D3s. It makes logical sense, and besides 2009 is the year of "s" products at Nikon.
