24-70 f2.8 G has major flaws?
Oct 3, 2009

Just read this review from photozone:

http://www.photozone.de/nikon_ff/456-nikkor_afs_2470_28_ff

Looks like the lens is better used on a DX camera.

Significant amount of barrel distortion, high CA, so-so bokeh, very visible vignetting.

Sounds really bad. Damn ! I just ordered one

The only good thing about it is its sharpness.

You agree to their findings?

"However, in summary the Nikkor 24-70 currently sets the benchmark for F-mount FX standard zoom lenses." doesn't sound too bad to me. Methinks you've somewhat misinterpreted their report.

Or, all the other 24-70s are even worse

That's a test on a 24 MP FX DSLR, the "worst case" scenario. Are you using a D3X? Anyways, what I've seen from this lens has always been very high quality. So, you probably can't buy anything better...

Yes, you really shouldn't be using this lens. Better sell it to me for $500, that's the max I'm going to pay for such a horrible lens.

just don't use it for anything at a vaguely wide aperture closer than 1 metre. Abberations at close range are horrible.

The 24-70 f2.8 G is horrible...
In reply to DaveWo, Oct 3, 2009

... because photozone writed it down.

HEY, that must be right !!! THIS is the truth, man. BELIEVE IT !

...

Or wait... hmmm... the 24-70 is by far the best mid-range zoom is used since 1978. Better than ANY other zoom I tried (Canon and Pentax). Very experienced users (e.g. Bjørn Rørslett) are very excited about the 24-70.

Maybe the 24-70 isn't as bad ...

best regards
Claus

at 24mm F8 subject distance 4m my copy is soft and loses resolution in outer edges of frame, very noticeable. Sharp center. No UV used, Specifically used for wedding formals, now I shoot at 35-70 everything fine. Just picked up 14-24, it trounces it at 24mm. the 24-70 is a great versatile lens but not without a minor flaw at 24mm, having used the big c version for four years it had far bigger issues.

the range cover 90% of what I do so there is only one alternative, the older AFS 28-70 which i only used on DX.

Well, all the more reason to send it to me then. I'll make sure to wear glasses to keep my eyeballs in place. Here's a picture of a 24-70 victim:

Ive got the 24-70 and I must admit, its pretty overrated, this was my second sample ( first one not good), even so at 24, it hasnt got a chance in hell compared with the 14-24, at same focal length.

Its a mid-range zoom you know and many photographers leave it on permanently.

Mid-range zooms are workhorses, they are compromizes but never soloutions and yes, pretty boring focal-lengths actually.

Optically I prefer the older 28-70 and then you dont get that awful helicod barrel moving in and out.

Not sure what you mean. I had the 28-70 before moving to the 24-70, and its barrel moved as well.

Some people would say their Tamron or Sigma can do at least the same.

The point is all about the price vs. the image quality. At around $1800 it is the most expensive 24-70 at the moment. But optically Sony seems to be better. Well more purer German blood than Nikon. See people pick up a Sony body just for that lens and happy with that forever.
