S2 swan song
In reply to Robert Spencer, Aug 11, 2009

So these must be amongst the final shots of your S2 before it goes off to its new user.

I think the fireweed is your best example of that flower that you have posted. Lovely colour and contrast with the background. The lupine is a fine shot too. I notice your cruise ship is sailing uphill - rather steeply so. Mind you, I see nothing odd about a sky with three moons so perhaps you are giving your S2 a psychedelic send-off.

I always enjoy your posts.

Stephen, the S-2 will remain in my possession as a back up for the S3. Need my Fuji colors you know. It will however have loaner status to anyone deserving & in need.

Your comments are as usual very accurate. I agree that the fireweed is my best to date. I always try to better myself though. I am now more aware than ever of background in preparing shots. Once I see a subject I desire I then move in focusing on the background in relationship to the primary subject. Its working well for me and especially in these wildflower shots using the S-2/Tokina 100-300mm F4 + Kenko 1.4 TC. The TC is used more for its constant minimum focus distance than for magnification alone. Thus enhancing bokeh (IMO).

I'm still trying to find the AHS (Auto Horizon Straightener) in PS. Seems to be missing in PS5 however. My problem has origin during the four years I spent aboard ship while enlisted in the US Navy. During that four years I was rocking & rolling @ sea or rocking & rolling in some bar. Either way I never saw a straight horizon during the first half of the sixties. To make things worse the latter half of the sixties as you have eluded to yourself was the psychedelic era. More tilted horizons! It stuck with me and now I can no longer distinguish which way is up.
Thanks for looking and commenting. Explain the term Swansong to me.
Take care. Bob

About the Moon. My moon shot came out bad so I cloned one above it and another below. Now I have three bad moons. I wonder how many bad ones it will take to equal one good one? Thanks for looking & take care. Bob

The moon reflection on water was taken while camped at Sandy Beach along the Inside Passage in Clarence Strait the same night as the triple moon shot was taken. The moon is not much but the reflection on the water is killer to my eye. Guess you thought so as well.

Ooh, Roberto....... the three moons. Are you sure you are living on planet earth?

Sorry I didn't see this one sooner. I suppose this may be one of the final sets before the students get hold of the S2?

Regards,

Bob

Ah, you will keep the S2 and loan it out. I was going on what you said earlier
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1020&message=32588528

where you seemed to imply that you would hand it on permanently. That could feel like deserting an old friend.

Background can make or break a flower or insect shot. Your OOF background of rich contrasting colour works really well.

I'm still trying to find the AHS (Auto Horizon Straightener) in PS. Seems to be missing in PS5

Simply go the Image menu and look for "Rotate canvas." Pick "arbitrary" and then experiment with how much you need to rotate. Your cruiser image needs to rotate counter clockwise. Usually somewhere between 0.5 and 1 degree is a ballpark figure to try. Then you just re-crop to trim the edges.

Well, that's how to do it in CS2. Not sure if PS5 has those same menu options but it seems likely.

Your explanation of your horizon tolerance from your Navy days made me laugh. I'm surprised you can walk at all on dry land

Swan song is a term coming from the myth that mute swans sing only once, immediately before they die, with a particularly beautiful rendition. So it means any performance made in the expectation that it will be the last one of a lifetime and of especial beauty. Your S2's swan song.

That is because you have put two dashes before the url of your first image.

Love those pea blossoms.

Is this, then, a photo interpretation of a scratched LP album with CCR singing, "I see a bad moon rising"?

All the usual attention to detail and setting.

Fireweed and Huckleberries up on Granite Pass on the MT/ID border yesterday. About 3 hours picking for a quart of berries.

Let's keep our S2 pics going. I've just bought a battery handle to replace the Cr123. Looks like I can keep the cam a little longer - it's my first DSLR, though I've had a lot of Nikons afterwards.
