I have a 40Gb Giga vu pro and would like to increase the capacity. Has anyone managed to up the size of the hard disk fitted in this unit?

If so - simple instructions would be helpfull!!

Thanks

I put a 120gig in mine the day after I bought it. No problems.

There was a how to published on here that I followed. I don't have the How To anymore, but it was very straight forward, remove the old drive and install the new drive and format.

I do remember you had to make sure to buy a certain type of drive for it to work, but I don't remember the details.

You might be able to do a search on here and find it.

Good luck!

No tricks, just remove the battery, 4 screws, then use some sort of non-marring tool to release the catches holding the two case halves together. Drive is an ordinary 2.5" PATA hard drive. Though Jobo officially supported only up to 120 gigabytes, as far as I know, there's no reason why you couldn't try a 320 gigabyte drive, which is currently the largest available.

I was looking at upgrading the drive in my old 40 GB jobo also.

Re the 4 screws - what heads do they have? They look like torx to me but non of my drivers fit them?

Thank in advance. Once I get the unit open I'll post back with how things go :O)

Peter

I sold mine awhile back so I can't check, but very likely a T6 driver will fit. T6 and T8 are super-common in computers.

48-bit LBA - 120gb limit
In reply to JeffS7444, Jun 9, 2009

depending on the device it might not know how to address larger than 120gb.

Thanks - i also think I would stick to 120gb as that seems to be a competitive price point for HDDs.

An upgrade of 40GB to 120GB is more than enough for any of my trips.

Once I get sorted I will report back.

FYI,

I just installed a 320 GB drive in my GigaVu Pro Evolution.

Here's what one needs:
1. One Torx type screwdriver size T6
2. A tweezer for picking out the battery cable
3. Some electric tape

4. Last but not least, a 2.5" IDE drive of your desired capacity. I think 320 GB is about as big as they come these days, with all the focus being on SATA now.

Procedure is straightforward. Begin by opening the lid over the battery and disconnect it.

Then use the screwdriver to remove the back cover, and disconnect the existing disk. Take note on how the insulating tape is attached, and duplicate it on your new drive. Then move the rubber bumpers from the old to the new drive, attach the IDE cable, and screw the whole thing back together. Then attach the battery.

When you turn the thing on again, goto the "device" menu, then to "Disk management" and select "reformat hard disk". When the formatting is done, you're set to go.

Cheers,
Jostein

If I had known this would work, I might have kept my GVPE for another year or two

Just to report a Samsung Spinpoint M5 160GB HM160HC 2.5" IDE/PATA work works fine also.
