Power Zoom lenses with K200D?
Apr 22, 2009

Do they work?

I know from experience that one does a K20D. Same for K200D?

The only thing Pz lenses need is power and the Pz/sdm contacts supply power.

The k200d supports SDM lenses so therfore will work with Pz lenses.

You won't get any of the features the original Pentax PZ bodies supplied though.

I assumed that too, but I have been told by the buyer that a Power Zoom lens I sold does not work with a K200D. It did work with my K20D.

Also apparently the K100D Super manual categorically states that Power Zoom does not work.

Has anyone here with an SDM-compatible camera other than K10/20D actually tried a Power Zoom lens on their camera.

Thanks for your reply anyway. Cheers.

Check if he's pulled the PZ mechanism backwards into Manual Zoom mode ?

A lot of people don't even realise the PZ lenses do this.

The same goes for the K200D.
Maybe too much power consumption for the AA batteries.

I don't have a power zoom lens or a K200D but the manual for the latter states as follows: "Note that this camera is not equipped with a power zoom function".

There is similar wording in the K100D Super Manual.

In both cases it is in the Appendix under "Functions available with various lens combinations." The table of functions available shows: "Power Zoom - No" in both cases.

The k200d manual is a bit woolly mixing up Power zoom functionality with power zoom function.

but the k200d wording is

"Power zoom function (image tracking,Zoom clip and auto zoom effects) are not compatible with this camera.
pg61

the k20d wording is

"Power Zoom (auto zoom)is available is a power zoom compatible FA lens is fitted to the camera"
pg59

So I think the answer is no Pz lenses cannot be used in Power Zoom mode on the k200d.

He tells me that he's sure it's in the PZ mode after I explained about the ring firmly snapping backwards and forwards for the two positions.

It seems PZ really doesn't work with the camera. This does surprise me because I thought it simply needed the two SDM power connections. Perhaps the voltage is not high enough.

Doesn't work on K-m either...
In reply to awaldram, Apr 22, 2009

I tried my FA28-105 PZ lens on my K-m just now, and the PZ function does not operate.

As others have speculated, I suspect the issue is insufficient power from the AA batteries.

The PZ/SDM contacts are not power contacts at least not in the strictest sense.

What they do is provide forward and back movement of the zoom mechanism similar to a P&S camera.

For them to work as PZ contacts the camera has to have at least part of the firmware program that is designed to control them. The K10/20 have the ability to use buttons or dials to zoom the lens without touching it. If they don't have this program then none of the PZ functions work. Only some of the PZ series cameras could do the other functions like subject size control or background PC control where it kept the subject the same size by auto zooming while you moved so you could control the backbround perspective.

The functions were not popular enough to be passed through to the ZX/MZ series that followed. But Pentax generally kept the zooming control active in the higher priced cameras.

I doubt it is a power issue. Most or all of the PZ series cameras used CR2 or CR123 batteries I think. None of them had battery grips available and I would suspect that 4 AA batteries is way more power than a pair of CR type batteries could sustain.

I think it is just that they did not have the room for the function in memory. Plus they only have included this function in the top 1 or 2 models of any particular camera series.

Hi,

Could you expand on this ??

The K10/20 have the ability to use buttons or dials to zoom the lens without touching it

As none of my Pz lens seem to be operable from the camera body , Though PZ functions fine.

The power zooming with the FA 28-80mm f3.5-4.7 was operated on my K20D by twisting the zoom ring on the lens. I am not aware of any way of operating the zoom from any digital camera, and could find no way of doing it with my K20D. I think it is only certain film cameras that were able to PZ from the camera. Therefore I assume all the lens requires to power zoom is power.

It would not have been worth it for Pentax to put much effort into supporting PZ as the lenses are so uncommon.

I'm not aware of any Pentax 35mm film camera which allowed power zooming using controls on the body.

I think I was mistaken in thinking some bodies had "+" and "-" buttons to zoom . Sorry about that.

I never used any of the more advanced film cameras myself.

I bought the K100ds to use my FA*80-200 f2.8 and IT WILL NOT POWER ZOOM. It will power zoom on my K20d. I guess one should say auto zoom.

Those SDM contacts on the K100ds could probably be enabled if someone could rewrite the frimware.
