wider ISO range and better ISO performance would get my eyebrows raised ,but I dont particularly want video on any of my camera,s (hd or otherwise)
I guess thats the way things will go though , I will resist as long as I can .
then give it all up and become a poet !!!

Just because a camera has a movie mode, it doesn't mean you have to use it.

As for the D400, I'm hoping will be as big a jump as from the D200 - D300. Otherwise it's change for changes sake, 'keeping up with the Canons', which seem to change very little updates imho.

Irrelevant to me though, as I've had my D300 for about 6-7 months a change is out of the question. Good job it does all that I need it to.

Clean low base ISO, clean high ISO
In reply to KenCarson, Apr 10, 2009

This would be most attractive feature to me:
ISO 100 - 6400 (with boost up to ISO 25600 and down to ISO 50)

Agreed, I'll wait for the D500. I just got my D300 8 months ago. However, a decent video mode would be a real bonus for me because I could take some great wildlife cinematography with my 300 f/4.

For those of us with D200s, a D400
In reply to stromaroma, Apr 10, 2009

would be very welcome. The updates on a D300 might not warrant upgrading.

no upgrade worth it from D300 if this is an "entry-level D400".

ISO 25600 on a 15 MP DX camera
In reply to KenCarson, Apr 10, 2009

Come on!!
That is just ridiculous. It's not all that useful on my D700 either.

Not Likely
In reply to KenCarson, Apr 10, 2009

Nikon does not compete tit for tat with Canon on Canon's timeline, which would be the only justification for this.

D1, D1X, D1H - D100
D2X, D2H - D200
D3 - D300

See a pattern here?

The D400 will probably spin off the D4.

It is possible that after 18 months since the announcement of the D300 a modest update with some other designation could occur, perhaps with an added S nomenclature, but they have always been minor at best.

Well, if the D400 has better iso 3200 than the D700 and more MP that certainly will deflate some of the FF fans. Cause they've been toughting FF on these boards for years as the only way to get low noise. And if the 10-24 is a nice, sharp, affordable WA option, we are golden! Hurray

This will really help with wildlife. Imagine good iso3200, a new 300mm VR lens, when it comes out, and a 1.7tc. FF would mean much more $$ and weight to get this reach.

Buy will the FF fans ever admit they were wrong? NO! Because they are a very stubborn bunch. Sorry for shouting, but I needed to raise my voice to make my point.

So I guess you are telling us that there will also be a D4 announced on the 14th along with the D400?

Optimistic: 50% chance
In reply to KenCarson, Apr 10, 2009

Pessimistic: not likely.

But hey, anything is possible.

Looks more definite that the D60 successor, D5000 will be around that bend. The rest is a toss-up.

Maybe a lens? If it is, it's probably not something people have been begging for.

I would think that the possibility of a DX D400 having better ISO 3200 than the D700 is slim to none!

However, if they can make ISO 3200 on a D400 as good as or better than ISO 1600 on the D300, that alone would make it interesting! Especially while adding a couple more MP.

I don't bet on this either. But I wish!!

That will bring D400 close to D700. If you check Thom Hogan's comment D700 is around 1.5 stops better than D300. That means ISO 3200 on D700 is better than ISO 1600 on D300. But not better than 800.

Especially while adding a couple more MP.
