Panasonic GH1 vs Canon S3IS
Mar 23, 2009

I don't have any DSLR experience and my best camera has been my current Canon S3IS. I like all the features of the S3 but want an upgrade to a better camera in low light. The GH1 seems to be what I'm looking for since I want an articulated LCD, good EVF, video mode, movie button, etc.

My question is: At 280mm (35mm equivalent) will the 14-140 kit lens be better in low light than the S3? The S3 has max aperture of 3.5 at that focal length while the GH1 kit lens is 5.8. Based on your experience with DSLR and other lenses, will the sensor size compensate for the slower lens of the GH1? Thanks.

Thanks! I'm waiting for the official price but I know that it will be more than the $600.00 I would spend in the Canon SX1.

How about sharpness? Can I get the same sharpness than the S3 without pp by increasing the sharpness settings of the camera? I sometimes do pp but wouldn't like to do it to all the photos.

Are you talking sharpness or depth of field? The S3IS should have a deeper depth of field. As to sharpness, who knows? The product hasn't been released. I'd be surprised if it wasn't a superior lens but no one has seen it.

I'm talking about sharpness. I've read that photos from DSLR's are not as sharp as photos from P&S unless pp is done. But I guess it depends on the lens, so I'll have to wait until it is released and some samples are available. Thanks!

You can increase the in camera sharpness in the GH1 if you do not plan on doing any post processing with the GH1 files.

Either way, I am predicting the GH1 files will be much better than the S3IS. The GH1 has the following advantage:

  • better ISO

  • faster focus

  • ability to change lens

Actually the gh1 with that lens will probably go for about $1400. Of course it will be better than the s3, but it will also cost 3 times more

Yes, I know the price will be much higher than the S3IS but right now there is no camera with all the features I like of the S3IS and better ISO performace. I've never been in the DSLR world because I want a movie mode (which only a few have now), a movie button, articulated LCD, EVF, etc. The GH1 seems to be a good camera to move on from the P&S world.

What about G1?

You didn't mention anything about video - if you are one of those users who really don't use the video functionality you might consider the G1 for a heck of a lot less money.

G1 is not in my list because I do want video (I mentioned movie mode and movie button = video). I find the video button very helpful as I switch a lot from photos to video and I can do it without changing the dial.
