I think there maybe an element of truth in that a D700/x could be in the field although I'm quite happy with my D300,D700 but shudder especially with slide of the £/$ against the yen the price of this camera when it does come out.

The price is the big question mark. Newegg had the competing 5DII for $2,699.00 yesterday.

Suspect, since I don't think it will be announced at PMA. It's too soon after the D3x launch. MAYBE this time next year.

Boy will I be pi$$ed off at Nikon, if they do that so quickly after the D3X. I just bought a D3X two weeks ago.

Everyone expects them to. The idea is that you buy a D3X only if the money means nothing to you, or if you wouldn't find the D700X satisfactory e.g. due to the asymmetrical 95% viewfinder coverage, lack of integral grip, lower ruggedness (due to e.g. pop-up flash), poor handling with the 24mm pc-e, or because of its single card slot. If you would find a D700X (i.e. D700 with D3X sensor) satisfactory and are concerned about depreciation, then you wait, like the rest of us.

Problem is Nikon has nothing to directly compete against Canon 5DII. That is a market share they are missing at and probably realize it. The sooner the get a D700x out there or whatever they call it, the sooner they can turn canon spent money into nikon spent money. Why wait a year???

Nikon works at their own pace. They will release a camera when they feel they are ready. If we don't like it. Well, that's just too bad.

Canon doesn't have anything to directly compete with the D300, the D700, or the D3 either. They all aim products between models so as to avoid direct competition. I.e. different models give you different feature sets.

My guess is USD3,500, to account for both exchange rates and that it'll sport a much better body than both 5DII and A900, with better AF and built.

too early IMO
In reply to dstefan, Feb 2, 2009

My guess is for later this semester or early next one. Before that Nikon has to replace first the D60 or D40 and then D300.

Its possible but i cant see it being likely. Economic conditions may mean that no new models appear on the market, Nikon needs to sell and push sell its D3x so a price drop would have more benefit than a new model release.

I also think its too early for a new model after the D3x.

After all pixels dont always mean a good image

Nikon would absolutely foolish to wait till 2010 and will not. PMA or earlier is my guess - it can't come soon enough.

Nonsense! It has the body, it has the sensor and processing, and Nikon cannot afford to wait for the 5D MKII to take a valuable am/pro share of the market. Nikon is ready and so is the market.

There will be new camera anouncements this year, as a new other photography related product.

Somewhere in-between?
In reply to Ilkka Nissilä, Feb 2, 2009

It's of course possible that this will be a bridge FF camera with res between the D700 & D3X. Franky I would welcome this as I don't need 24mp or rear view or video but would welcome sensor-cleaning and weather-sealing. Such a camera would at last force me to sell my Canon 5D MKI which has served me so well alongside my D3 for concerts. Frankly it's a pain to run 2 systems and I haven't opted for the D700 as that res range is covered by my D3. The D700x could be everything the 5D MKII isn't, for me anyway...

Nikon have been very aggressive over the last 2 years, and it brought them the just sales rewards. in addition Thom Hogan last year heard that nikon may release the smaller d700 sized version prior to the d3 body, and we know the D3X shipped a lot later than nikon originally intended. perhapse this is true.

I assume also that nikon will test bodies all the time, when they release them however is another story. I feel that this seems too soon. i guess we will know soon enough
