Zenfolio Images vs Flickr Images - Any Difference?
Jan 21, 2009

My Flickr Pro account is expiring and I'm considering changing to Zenfolio. I've started a trial account at Zenfolio and would like to know if there is any difference in appearance between Flickr and Zenfolio images? A couple of examples follow. Feedback and C&C appreciated. Thanks.

Yes there is a difference.
The flickr images appear.
The zenfolio don't
It appears "Content Protected by Owner".

I prefer Zenfolio.

I have been a Zenfolio user almost from the start. See debra.zenfolio.com.

Zenfolio does one thing I really like it for: automatic scaling of images to the window size of the viewer. So your friends with small and huge screens all see images that are scaled to fit. (And they can download the full size if you let them.) So no more searching for the optimal image size as a viewer of a site.

The one other thing that differs (but varies at times) is the maximum size of each image. Last time I looked it was 10MB on Flickr and 12MB on Zenfolio. Even 12MB is borderline for max quality jpgs from my 450D. (Depends on the amount of detail in the images of course.)

Hmm...How about now?
In reply to leorolim, Jan 21, 2009

Yeah, I suppose that is quite a difference. Thanks for the heads up. Looked fine to me in preview, but the default Zenfolio protection prohibits downloading the full size images. I changed that setting, so please let me know if it works now, or if I have to redo the first post.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. The automatic sizing is definitely one of the selling points I like about Zenfolio. I also like being able to arrange the home page the way I want, unlike Flickr, which always shows your most recent uploads first.

Flickr blocked
In reply to technophile, Jan 21, 2009

A difference immediately apparent to me is that Zenpholio appears to be one of the few image hosts not blocked by my workplace firewall. They use a subscription blacklist provided by Websense, so this is probably a factor for many companies, not just mine.

It's the exact opposite at my office, only Flickr is allowed!

They appear exactly identical to me. Were you expecting any difference? If so, what? Also, were these images uploaded at this size or automatically resized by Zenfolio/Flickr?

On my screen the Zenfolio images are quite a bit darker than the Flickr ones.

Thanks for checking. I couldn't see any difference, but was curious if others might. One diffference became apparent immediately, when the first response revealed a problem with security settings. That was helpful. The identical files were uploaded to each page and I linked to same size images. Perhaps if I uploaded full size images direct from the camera there might be a slight difference, but since I don't plan to do that, I just wanted to check that these images were at least equal before changing to Zenfolio.

That's odd..

Thanks for the feedback. Is anyone else seeing this? Can anyone explain it? Which photos looked closer to proper exposure, the Flickr or the Zenfolio files?

It may be silly of me to worry about this since I'm such an amateur, but I couldn't help asking before changing to a different photo hosting site.

I agree. On the first picture you have to compare the bottom middle part of the 'flower' and you'll notice that Flickr is brighter. On the second image look at middle left, the mossy rock is darker on the Zenfolio image.

So which one is "better"?
In reply to Phacoid, Jan 21, 2009

Thanks for the feedback. Is one closer to the correct exposure than the other?

Not quite. Both images are exactly identical. Here are the file checksums:

What I was seeing was probably due to looking at the pictures from different angles on my screen, thus resulting in different brightness. So the images probably do look the same.
