He says in the ebay listing " I'm not sure what the 1:8/1000 refers to. I assume that last number is a serial. " He is so clueless.

Re: 1000mm F8 Pentax FS by clueless seller

No, it is a 1:8 (f/8, Max) to 1:45 (f/45, minimum). I think the description of f/4.5 is a typo, but f/8 is not.

So it is a 1000mm f/8 lens. The size looks about right for a 1000mm f/8. It should work on 35mm. I don't know which version of the lens it is, but here is a link to the K version http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/primes/extreme-tele/K1000f8.html

And yet his last sentence is, "it would be useful to me to remove the lens elements to add to my optics workbench."

He has an optics workbench, he knows how to play with lens elements, and yet he's playing all innocent and dumb in his description? Something seems off. I know optics is not just camera lenses, but basic lens specs can't be hard for an optics tech to figure out.

Why not clue him in?

Unless you're looking to get this lens cheap (because it's mis-described), why not send the seller a message giving him the correct description? I've done this in the past and the seller was always appreciative.

The Pentax Tele-takumar 1000mm F8 was made before the K-mount version came out.

I just did. BTW in the sellers Bio:
"All About Me

What everyone should know about meI'm currently a piano/violin teacher and an astrophysics major. I'm also a staff astronomer and engineer at a public observatory, in the process of starting an optics company."

Hmmm, starting an optics company but not knowing the FL on lenses that are plainly marked.

Hmmm, yes, that does sound strange! Speaks volumes about the competency (or lack thereof) of that observatory's staff...

I did that once. A seller had a Pentax 110 camera listed as a 35mm K mount. I didn't get a thank you, but I saw it relisted correctly a few days later.

It's me!

Hi everyone! I'm the clueless seller!

First of all, I'm a girl.

Second of all, camera lenses are not my specialty (telescopes and physics are). The lexicon of the camera-lens world may be sometimes lost on me, but ask me about a lens' modulation transfer function or wave optics, or milling machines for that matter, and I'm your gal.

Third... I'm still at university! Could ya cut some slack?? The lens came to me from a friend from a film I worked on (justine-haupt.com). Tough times have hit, as you all know.

I thank all those who sent me a message very very much for pulling me out of the dark (and I sent quick replies through ebay as such).

Hey, this is a pretty neat forum!

We don't mind.... But most here are not so please forgive the tendency to see everyone as a male...

That sounds a bit complicated.....

Sorry I usually cruise Ebay looking to help people who are somewhat clueless as to what they are selling or the history. Especially when it comes to astronomy or photo gear.

Sorry about the "clueless remark" , if I would have known you were a young woman I would not have started this thread. Good luck selling the lens.

Re: It's me!

Joe, if you hadn't started the thread, then it's possible that no one would have messaged me to tell me what I have (and I'd still be in the dark). So don't say that! Also, this has turned into probably the most interesting ebay listing I've ever had thanks to this posting -- that's worth something.

But I'm not sure why knowing my gender or age would make that big of a difference.

One last little point, when I said in the original listing "I think that last number is a serial", I was referring to the 2617774, not the 1:8/1000.

I'm actually considering pulling the listing until I can fix the lens mount -- it looks like a very simple fix.

Don't think so...

My browser shows that the auction has 6 more days to run. With no bids, of course the reserve has not yet been met. However, there is plenty of time for bidders to appear. The smart ones won't bid until a few minutes before the auction closes...
