The REAL scoop on MX!
Nov 9, 2008

I called Nikon service center (800 number) and talked with a girl

there about a lens issue I'm needing repaired. I then casually asked her if she knew anything about the new Nikon camera announcement coming up. Surprisingly, she had a lot of info. I asked lots of questions and she seemed to tell me everything she new about the new MX format. Anyway, long story short, here is what she knew for sure:

1. November 20th- Nikon to announce new MX camera with larger than FF sensor.
2. Camera available two weeks after announcement.
3. New lens line but will work with older ff lenses.
4. The sensor will be more than 24mp and the ff crop mode is greater than
12mp!
5. Camera is d700 sized!
6. will ship with "pro" mx kit lens.
7. She has seen the actual camera.
8. The technology is a big jump over what we have now.

What she had partial info on

1. She thought the price would be around d700 prices but was not certain for sure.
2. Not sure how many lenses would be introduced with the camera other than
the pro kit lens and an "awesome" telephoto. Did not know the actual specs
of the kit lens.
3. Seemed to think the sensor was a Nikon made one but not 100%.
4. D3 type body she thinks is being phased out.

She didn't indicate any of this was secret and I was really glad to get the info. Who knows, maybe she is completely full of hot air. But she seemed to really know. When I asked her generally about a new Nikon camera, she said "oh yes the new mx camera is being introduced on the 20th- available early December." Again, this was from talking to one of the people who answer the phone in the lens repair department. We will see what happens. Not sure how this meshes with the BIG announcement at WPPI. And I think she must be really wrong on the price.

Could be. But she talked to me for an hour! I just wanted to post and see what happens on the 20th.

My next door neighbor is selling the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco for $10K. But I am not certainly about the price ;-).

The one thing that is obviously incredibly wrong is that it WON'T be around the same price as a D700 !

.. that I wanna sell ya cheap...
...you gotta come see it...
..gonna like it a lot...

I mean really? And the fact that it made you want to post here... for what purpose? What satisfaction did you get by posting such obvious misinformation?

MX format does not make sense to me from Nikon or Canon yet. These are companies that perfect an invention such as that of 35mm film and Digital extensions of same format.

But innovators such as Kodak and others that can afford to invent, they are not. Canon and Nikon (especially Canon) is in the business of perfecting existing technologies to reap large benefits in regular cycles.

That's just my opinion... I do not believe there is a large format sensor in the works for Nikon.

There is soooo much more money to be reaped from existing technology and the further perfection and development of [it]

We don't have long to wait... we will see. I already stated repeatedly that I thought she was wrong on price and that she was not sure herself. Since I heard it from Nikon and not a camera store owner or some friend of someone who knew someone at Nikon, I thought it was worth posting.

I have the strange feeling this one is true though I have trouble with the pricing and the idea of squeezing this into a D700 sized body. Breaking the mould of 35mm is a very exciting idea.

MX is certainly on the way -- prelaunch rumors are becoming more consistent from known sources. i couldn't vouch for the rest of the information. in particular:

  • phase out D3 style body? not likely as its smaller than D700+grip and pros want the grip

  • big telephoto first lens out? cause better bird shots are what people want MF for?

  • Mx sensor at 2x Fx sensor size means body cost > 40% greater. MF market characteristics would lead to 3x Fx body price.

I don't understand all the animosity toward the OP. He's stated very clearly that all he's doing is passing along some info. No need to treat it as gospel and get all worked up because it doesn't agree with your world view.

Nikon is getting quite a reputation lately for bucking the trends in the SLR market and going their own way in some regards. I think the idea of MX makes perfect sense from a marketing and technology perspective. Afterall, aren't FF and APS-C all 'artificial' standards and limitations? Its quite obvious that Nikon is not satisfied with high pixel density + low ISO performance FF like the Canons and Sonys. So, the most obvious way to circumvent this issue is to increase the sensor size.

If (and I realize this is a big if) they have managed to design and build a FF+ sensor that gives better high ISO performance than the traditional FF sensors while maintaining backward compatibility with existing FF lenses wouldn't this be hugely attractive to the professional studio shooters? Especially if it comes close to matching the Hassies, Mamiyas and Leaf's and comes in around $10K? (Yeah, I don't buy the D700 price - that's obviously false)

In the last couple of years Nikon seems to have finally realized that they were getting significantly behind Canon in the technology leader department and decided that the best strategy was to try to leapfrog the competition by redefining the high-end dSLR. The D3 and D700 were clearly the first and second salvos in this barrage. MX may be the killer blow.

I call B.S. only because no way some random girl on the Nikon phone system would be authorized to release such information. I could be wrong, but I would challenge anyone to call any Nikon number and get any details about a camera that has not been officially announced.... No way, no how...

I should have only posted the items she knew for sure. I took notes as I was on my computer as I was talking to her. Feel free to disregard anything you like. I am just posting what she told me. She could be 100%bs or maybe not. I would like to have the info anyway. We will see on the 20th.

Or maybe like this...

The kind of scoop you just don't see every day.
