SB-900 Firmware update...
Nov 4, 2008

I've got my second SB-900 today and owner of the store said that he talked to Nikon rep and she said that this firmware is released and fixes that stupid temperature cut-off problem (although I turned this feature off).

Did you hear anything about it or tried this update? I can't find it online somehow... ;o(

as it can be defeated via it's already existing menu settings.

That's exactly what I did - just turned it off, but he (owner) said that "Nikon was to conservative on the temperature level and this update should fix this issue for good..."

I guess - let's wait...

Do a search and you find more then one person having the sb-900 shutting down with overheating shutdown turned off..

The overheating issue is not mentioned in the changes in the firmware....

....I had a friend turn off the "cut off" function (after it had locked up at a wedding), and later it still locked up. A firmware upgrade would be welcome concerning this...but show me first.

Thanks Paul!! I've just downloaded and installed on both my SB900 speedlights. Heres what Nikon says about the upgrade:

The following improvements have been made in version 5.02

  • With uninterrupted shooting with the SB-900 set to i-TTL mode, images captured just before the flash ceased firing were sometimes overexposed. This issue has been resolved. By resolving this issue, metering precision has been further increased and the number of times the flash fires has also been increased. When the SB-900, set to TTL auto flash mode, is used with a camera supporting the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS), flash mode automatically changes to A mode according to camera communication status. That flash mode was previously maintained, but it has been modified so that TTL auto flash mode is restored once the SB-900 again recognizes the camera as a CLS-compatible camera.
