Battery Charger Light Won't Change to Green
May 11, 2002

I have been using the battery charger that came with my 5000 for about a month and all of a sudden the no longer changes to solid green when the battery achieves full charge. I always blinks orange. The battery is getting charges however.

It is annoying as I now do not know "when" the battery is full. Plus I hope that the battery does not get overcharged. Guess it is time to call nikon. I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Hi Ken,

FWIW, I have an 880 charger that goes from blinking orange (charging state) to solid orange when charged. I thought it odd that the light did not glow green instead. Seemed like an odd color choice to me.

Are you SURE yours initially changed to green when charged? Did you check your manual? Silly questions, but I just had to ask...

Hi Dana,

Thanks for the response. Up till the other day it turned from a flashing orange light to a solid green when charged. No longer does that.

I called Nikon yesterday and they gave me the typical run around that an inexperienced tech does. Told me to clean the contacts, fully drain the battery and try again... wiggle wires if necessary. I told them that I did not see what good that would do since it "did" get fully charged. I told them I would try it, lol, and then call them if it does not work.

Tomorrow I am going to call again.

Ken

Just tried to charge the battery this morning. Came back 10 minutes later and the light was off. Wiggled the wire a bit and now it is blinking again.

Called Nikon and they said to send the charger back for service. Makes the camera totally useless for the time it takes for them to fix or exchange it. :c(

New Mh-51 costs $25.00
eh-21 ac adapter/charger costs $60.00
Shipping to send bad battery back I guess about $10.00

Anyone have the ac adapter? Recommend it over the charger?

Thanks

Hi Ken,

My charger has the AC adapter built-in, whereas the "new" ones do not; the AC charger by itself is about $25 more.

I use the Nikon battery 'till it runs down (about one hour), then switch to an external Maha Powerex battery pack ($65?). The battery pack is not as cumbersome as I expected and gives lots of run time (reportedly 4 hours).

As compared with the Nikon, I'd say it's an excellent value.

my ac adapter (part that plugs into the wall) stopped working, so i went to frys (local uber electronic store) and bought one of those variable adapters that has different settings and different plugs, cost about 15 dollars and works perfectly, the only problem is it doesnt have a setting between 9.5 and 12 so i set it to 9.5 and the charges take about 2 hours instead of an hour and half, but it works, sometimes the light doesnt change to green, but i find unconnecting the charger and reconnecting it good helps it, something to do with the connection i suppose, but i just let a drained battery sit in it for about 2 hours and it works for me

Just tried to charge my battery and, unlike before, when it used to turn to green when fully charged, it now stops blinking yellow and remains steady yellow.
I panicked but, now that I have read the other comments, I assume it is alright.

Hi Walter,

Not sure why.. but a few days after I wrote this it started working again. Guess the Nikon tech was right after all. :c)

When I plug in the charger I make sure that the prongs are full locked in the open position, folds in with my model, and that the plugs are fully plugged in to the recharger.
