Capture NX 2 - can't install or uninstall!

Hi all,

I was running the Capture NX 2 demo perfectly well on my iMac and today downloaded the update to 2.1. Upon attempting to update using the software it downloaded, it got as far as checking my system to see if an update could be applied, then showed the screen that would start off the installation (with the Continue button bottom right) but almost immediately the panel disappeared and the installer appeared to have crashed.

I decided that I should probably purchase a key at this point, perhaps it didn't like that I wasn't registered, so I bought an upgrade package from Capture NX 1 from Imagemixer.net (I do already have a registered NX1 from them) and downloaded the whole Capture NX2 installer from them, then tried to uninstall my existing NX2 demo. But the uninstaller wasn't working either. It would say to me:

"echo $HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist" doesn't understand the sysoexec message. (-1708)

So I can't uninstall, I've tried to remove the NX2 demo files manually but that's not helped anything and I can't get the installer for the newly downloaded NX2 to work either. Just crashes straight away same as the Nikon updater did.

So what's going on? What am I to do?!

So, it seems that the 2.1 update requires Mac OSX up to 10.5.4

Maybe this is the problem. Don't forget 10.5.5 introduced several important updates to the system.

Okay, I've managed to get a working copy of NX2 off a colleague's Time Machine, copied his prefs as well as I'd deleted those too, and I've ended up with a copy of NX2 on my Mac that now works, but is registered in his name. So, I'm back in business, but morally I'm not happy that I'm using his registration.

Is there any way I can reset the registration so that I can re-enter my own legal ownership details which I've just received from ImageMixer.net?

Yeah I'm on 10.5... Thing is I just tried to uninstall NX2 from my Tiger-based (10.4.11) Powerbook, as an experiment, and I've got the same problem with the Uninstaller. Haven't tried the update or installer on it, in case it's creating another problem of it's own.

I'm not sure why you can't just delete NX 2 from your computer and then download it from the Nikon site and use your key to activate it. However, another option is to contact Nikon support. A number of years ago I had a problem with one of their software applications and I had to delete it from the register before I could get it to download and work.

The reason is the very reason I started the thread - starting up either the Updater or the Installer results in it "running a check to see if the application can be installed" like it usually does, then presenting the Upgrade/Install initiation screen for a couple of seconds, before it disappears and the installer quits without an error screen.

I guess I'll have to contact Nikon because I've not seen any similar descriptions online.

I queried Nikon support. This is their answer:

"Dear XXXXX,
Thank you for your email,

At the moment we can only guarantee operation of CNX2 on Leopard up to 10.5.4. Although some customers have found that it will operate under the most recent update we cannot guarantee this. I do apologise for any inconvenience."

So you should take care if your OS is 10.5.5

I was also interested because I have the latest Mac OSX update.

We can only guarantee full compatibility with Leopard up to version 10.5.4 and although some users have found that it will continue to operate when they upgrade their OS we cannot guarantee this operation.

Please check http://www.nikon.co.uk regularly for updates as our Development team are striving to have updates ready for the Mac OS in the near future. I apologise again for the inconvience. (sic)

Personally I'm more than a bit hacked off about this. 10.5.5 has been out for at least a week now and the 2.1 update only appeared to me the other day. Considering just how important the Mac platform is supposed to be to the 'creative community' you'd think they'd have tested this on the latest OSX first.

Let's hope they hurry up and fix it soon!

sorry but you somehow expect Nikon to have gotten advance copy of 10.5.5 patch and have the 2.1 tested, certified for use, bundled and distributed in a few days?

Let's look at what the just announced final CS4 is certified for:

Mac OS X v10.4.11–10.5.4

there is always a time lag between an OS release and a 3rd party app release and Nikon is not lightning quick w/ their software in any event.

How long did it take Apple to fix the CS3 files on a network drive problem in 10.5.3? Something like 2 months as I recall.

What you could do is go into Activity Monitor when the Installer is running and Inspect/Sample the process and see if you can glean any information about what files it has open, etc.

As I think I said earlier, on my system NX2 2.1 runs & installed just fine on my 10.5.5 system although I forget offhand which I installed first (never, ever be the first one on the block to load a big sw update).

Hi, did this get resolved?

I am having the same problem. I have OS X 10.5.5. Currently running NX2 2.0.0. During the update install it just shuts down after checking.

Your help would be appreciated

Nikon wrote to me and confirmed it must be a bug caused by a new feature in the brand new Mac OS point update.

They've yet to fix it, several months later.
