Just a thought...
May 1, 2002

Background:

I'm a 24 year old student that live in the nothern part of Norway, not far from Sweden. I finish my studies this spring and some time after that I plan to get a job as an engeneer. But I have the whole summer free for the first time in 12 years. So I thought that I might travel out in the world with no spesific target as a holliday. So the best alternative for me is to borrow my friends car and head into Sweeden. I first thought about taking friends with me, but desided that this is something that I want to do for myself and I want to feel the freedom of not having to obey to any planing and other peoples wishes. After some research I found to major happenings in sweeden that I would like to attend to. One festival with lots of cool music and one Top Fuel Drag-razing competition. These to events can easily be combined as its only 2 weeks between them and these to weeks I could spend driving around looking at tourist attractions, taking photos and spending the day in cities. All togheter this trip will last from 3 to 4 weeks.

My plan:

As you might expect from me posting this at dpreview, I enjoy taking pictures. So this will be a sentral part of my holliday. And this is where it start to become interesting. Why not put up a webside that I on a dayly basis update with pictures and a travel diary. This would naturally contain graphic describing of what the scene was like when I took my photos, experiences I have on my trip and thoughts about what its like to spend my time traveling alone in a foren country. I could even write about people that I meet and their experiences. This page will be open to anyone that want to follow me over the internet. I could have a forum where people can come with examples of activities and where I could come with direct feedback on things that people are interested in. People will also have the posibillity to contact me directly. This will be a kind of reality internet as opposed to reality tv.

Practicaly:

I'll do all the programing myself, so this is no problem. I have server space thats far beyond what I probobly would need for a project like this.

Conserns:

Nobody will find it interesting and I'll put down alot of hard work for nothing...

My question:

Do you fine folks have any ideas as to how this can be done? Anything to add to the plan? And most of all- is this something that people can fint interesting and something that will be interesting enough to make people check back the next day?

Of course you know you'll need a laptop and a remote internet connection to accomplish this. I'd be very much interested in seeing your online travel journal. I've never had the means to travel abroad, so i just love to see stuff like you want to do to learn about things in unknown lands. Good luck!

I just traded one of my linux servers for an "old" laptop. It got 4 gb harddrive... so I would probably have to make some pitstops at local internet cafees... As for internet connection- I could use a celular phone with ir module to upload images and text... And If I make an usable web admin frontend I could upload without too much cost. Larger updates and hires images could be uploaded at internet cafees...

Maybe I should start to look around for sponsors that could pay for my online time:] Who knows:) I also thougt about a system that people could sign up for a postcard from one of my pitstops... maybe I could use paypals to charge $1 for a postcard with some nice local image on:]

Great! Let's see it!

I'm American but spent lots of time in southern Sweden (Anderstorp) and have family there. Like Norway, Sweden has wonderful people and very beautiful countrysides.

Since you mentioned that you are going to a drag strip I just thought I'd put in a plug about the Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp. Its an ex-Formula 1 track with much of its racing done in Spring and Summer. Some of the biggest names in racing have been there and it still continues to host some very exciting racing. (Swedish Touring Cars and Rallying are some good examples)

I look forward to see your voyage thru Sweden, great idea! PLease keep us posted and give us the website (if different from this forum) that you'll use to show pictures and give details of your trip. Make sure to keep your camera dry though as it rains a bunch in Sweden.

Tack!

I'll look into that:) Actually I have a bunch of friends from back home that race rally cars... Just local heroes- no big names, but If I'm lucky I'll bump into them if I go to the right racing strips at the right time:] Might get some interesting inside shots if I'm lucky:] I heard earlier that one of them might enter with his streetcar to Pite-Drag. Not shure if thats gonna happend, but It would be fun:)

Like I say- I have about 2 weeks to travel south and if I get as far as Anderstorp I'm shure to stop by:)

Any other interesting places to visit? Altho Norway border to Sweden- Its amazing how little I know about our brothers in the east... Bet It'll be interesting to learn about their country:)

I'll keep posting as I plan my trip... Still have some variables that havent been calculated... Like the car... I have to do some serious mecanical work to get it into shape, but in 2 weeks time I'll drive back to my fathers workshop and get my fingers dirty...

I have a cousin here in the US that packed his camera, laptop and whatever, and traveled the perimiter of the United States. His goal was to write a book. He photographed and interviewed people all along the way and I believe it took him about 6 months to finish the trip.

I don't know the outcome of his journey, but I bet he could help with tips for a trip like that.

As an idea generator, here's a link to a travel journal I wrote during a three-week tour through Europe. The photos are stored at Fototime.com, which automatically generates thumbnail and web-sized versions of your images. This saved me a huge amount of time when constructing the site.
