Somehow, I doubt this is it. But, it would be great to be able to use non-VR Nikon lenses as well as the newer VR versions on the same Nikon body. That could entice me to trade up from the D80, but I'm hoping for a smaller bodied FX model in a year or so that I'm willing to pay more money for. Would love a D70 or D80 size body with a full frame sensor and a large viewfinder. Sounds impossible, but Nikon has made some great film SLRs that didn't weigh a ton. I still like my Nikon FA even if I don't use it much.

My guess is that it will use a new sensor with wide DR, low noise, and low heat.

Can you also suggest 6 numbers I can use on the next MegaMillions Lottery? I have a good feeling these may be the ones!

My guess is LOWER pixel count with fantastic noise/low-light performance... one could hope. Or did Thom already say it is 12 MP?

Man, I hope the video guesses are wrong, but they probably aren't.

I think in one of his posts he only denied that it was 10mp, so most likely it is the 12mp D300 sensor or less likely but possible, a new higher MP sensor.

My money is on 12mp D300 sensor.

Really? When did that start? ; )

information from them, he has to limit what he reveals.

Sorry, but as written, incorrect. I've said it many times: I have no official relationship with Nikon and no advance access to information or equipment via any official channel. I'm pretty sure that Nikon would like to know where some of my information does come from. They've successfully cut off one of my sources, but not all of them.

So, no, he won't spill the beans.

Be happy to spill the beans. However, since my run-in with Nikon after divulging the D70 specifications early, I've since used the more journalistic practice of using multiple sources before divulging anything. I've got a pretty good handle on the full specifications (and more) from a single source, but I haven't gotten a second source to back that up, so I'm not writing anything yet.

Good chance he has an advance model
in his hand to start working on his next e-book,

Nope. Sometimes I think Nikon doesn't overly mind that I leak stuff. They certainly could quiet me down until launch day by giving me early access and having me sign NDAs, but they've never even broached the subject with me.

so it can be ready
not too long after the product is being purchased and people want to
know how to maximize its features.

Right. Which is why my D3 book will appear almost a year after the camera was announced ; ).

Sure. Try something like 12, 4.5, 3, 11, 90, and 105. For the bonus number use 1080.

I'd say you're hot, although I suspect it's a XX-105mm DX lens.

There must be an update of the 24-120 VR lenses which is one of the weakest lenses in the Nikon line up. I suggest a 24-120 VR constant aperture f3.5 or f4 FX lens. Probably an f4 to make it a useful walk-around lens for the D3 and D700.

Nikon probably need update of the 18-135 DX lens with VR or Sigma et al will beat them to it.

Regards

Paul

Geez, Thom, that sure blows my idea that you were larger than life! You always seemed well connected. Obviously it's Nikon's loss. I would think they'd be pleased to do advance placement with some of the better known reviewers who have proven themselves, such as you have over the years.

Personally, I think Nikon should stop producing so many lenses with the same range. How many 18-55 lenses are out there? It's confusing to buyers. Why not make it a 17-125VR instead of 18-135? Or a 20-120VR? Heck, pick a number. I just hate to see an 18-135VR come out, but that's just my bias.

Whatever they make to accompany the D90, I hope it has a metal lens mount. To me, the plastic mounts (if used at all), belong in the smaller body cameras.

What about a 24-105/4 VR-II for FX use, might replace my 28-105 Nikkor if it still is very well distortion corrected. Nikon did discontinue the 28-105 some time ago, something is coming to replace it and soon.

18-105 (5,83x zoom) would be too wide zoom range for a quality lens, a 24-105 (4,38x zoom) is more easily doable with current lens materials (sharpness, pincushion/barrel control, contrast, price etc.).

Re: When will the naming regimen change?

Okay, so currently we're up to the D80...and now the successor will
be (supposedly) named the D90. But they can't (in the near future)
use the D100 designation, so I wonder when (if) the naming regimen
will change...unless, of course, they stop the series.

Nikon has not used models with 5 in the end with the D-series like they used to do with film SLR models (F55, F65...) so they still have at least D45, D55, D65, D75, D85, D95 and then they might use D46 and such if they are desperate enough... But I have wondered too a few years what naming system will they choose when they have to change the current one. They might just change the letter to keep it relatively simple and closer to current naming that is familiar to customers.
