I think this would be a good idea. Why not.

I say free speech is good, lettem bash away. Don't fight it or discourage it what so ever in fact, promote it.

Sony isn't perfect, they don't claim to be. Lettem have it, start on this thread if you want.

Lens prices
Sonystyle website
Customer service

All of it. Tear into them as hard as you can. I'd read every word of it.

Lettem know what you think, be as brutally honest as you can.

Love to help...but I am busy trying new things with my gear as research...
In reply to cgarrard, Jun 29, 2008

It started with my F717...I had a hunch that Sony was out to screw me...well; after 4 years and and about 15K images I couldn't quite put my finger on it...

Got the A100 to continue my search; as Sony's master plan for hoodwinking me was still elusive...after several months my investigating still hadn't uncovered anything. I even went so far as to purchase a few excellent copies of legacy Minolta glass - nothing. Oh, there were a few noisy pictures now and again, but that was easily solved with software, or even better, teaching myself how to expose correctly in most cases...I also added the HVL56 to see if that would shed some more light on Sony's trickery...

Still frustrated by my lack of progress in bringing down the evil Sony, I decided that answer must lie in the NR function included with the A700...I purchased the camera in Feb from Sony Style and got a pretty good deal (not BB good). I am sure there is something in the small print that I missed...

I soon added to my gear, pristine copies of the Beercan, Sigma 50 Macro, and the 20/2.8. Then added a 5600 HS(D)...all this stuff for a total of $215.00. I haven't gone down that road yet; but I think there may be a connection between Sony and Craig's List...

I am at a loss...I shoot in manual mode, cRAW, all the time...I process using IDC for my conversions then work the resulting JPEGS in CS2. I have a 19" monitor that I view my images on; and since my eyes are not the same size as a Giant Squid, I try to keep my images at a realistic size when viewing and evaluating. I have images printed following standards with regards to pixels, ppi, and dpi...

Please, can anyone help me? What am I missing? Is it possible that I could turn up my enjoyment just a few notches? What is Sony doing? Is it like exposure to the Sun; the damage only becomes evident after several years?

Hapster

Okay, for real now - lens prices could be a little better. But I wouldn't worry about that if I had better luck stumbling across deals on CL or EBay.

People need to get there expectations in check...yes they have been making P&S and sensors for years. They have been at this (DSLRs) now what, 2 / 3 years? Give them a chance...Make the best of what you have; instead of worrying about what you don't even have yet. Just take a look at Hyundai...

Step back from your monitors and wipe the nose grease from the screen; just for a minute, try to focus on where the gnat is in the frame and the composition, instead of trying to always see if the gnat has hemorrhoids...

Damn Sony for telling us what products they are going to bring us BEFORE they are ready for release!

Damn them for releasing them ON TIME - and - for releasing other products too that they didn't tell us about!

Why can Sony lenses be price like Canon..
In reply to cgarrard, Jun 29, 2008

With no hood etc.

Maybe even Albinar pricing plastic lenses would give Sony a real edge in lens pricing!!!

Sony seems to like pricing near Nikon.. Go figure

Thinks people hate I don't get

US pricing seems fair.. not a bargain.. but fair

SURE... I do get why people don't like this.. but I think this is going to help get A900's in local pro targeted shops quiker and on average prices from reputable dealers on all but the F56AM flash have stayed the same or even gone down

Things People hate I do get:

Somystyle organization and upkeep is lacking

Customer service appears spotty

Gold camera needs purple lenses (UofW joke )

I hate...
In reply to cgarrard, Jun 29, 2008

The things I hate:

I hate not having a personal service technician who is willing and capable to service all of my equipment with a 2 business day turn-around. He/She should also have a direct line that I can call whenever I have a question or concern. With the amount of cash I've spent, I deserve this

I hate not knowing more than everyone else.

I hate that the 300/2.8 SSM is out of my reach.

I hate that the bank won't give me 100k to drop on photography equipment.

I hate that Sony doesn't have a decent wide angle and ultra-wide angle lens, ahem, that also has a reasonably fast aperture. We know the wide angle is coming, and who knows, it may be "ultra" wide angle. However, it isn't here, so I can hate it for now.

I hate that the one lovely used lens I have and want to sell hasn't gone up in value since I bought it. Everything else has, so what gives?

Most of all...

I hate people who hate life, and thus only whine, complain, and/or pout about what Sony isn't doing for them on a daily basis. We all have gripes. That doesn't mean we should be constantly talking about them. Life is good for each and every person here. The fact that you can afford a computer, or at least have access to one puts you ahead of billions of less fortunate folks. Complaining about photography equipment on a daily basis just makes you sound petty and pathetic. If you hate this stuff so much, get up off your duff, and do something with your life. Sitting here and complaining isn't getting you anywhere.

Someone needs to start a thread about what we love...I'm feeling pretty positive now that I've vented all the things I hate.

Feel better? lol

I figured there were so many people out there of late that seemed to be stewing about Sony, this thread would let them do so. So we can move on to the greater things like pretty flower shots, the joy of sharing a personal artistic vision, and learning from one another instead of bashing products/companies and people.

Let them vent it, and we can get on. No reason to put wind in the sails of them, let them run it out of their system. I say.

(he he..you asked for it!)

Giving us "bionz" RAW
Making the grip sensors on the A700 EU version, non working plastic
For overpricing the A100 and A700 on release
For not offering users a new 50mm f1.7
For not giving us 300/400mm f4 primes
Or a 70-200mm f4
Or a real UWA non tamron badged zoom
Making the A100 really noisy!
Turning a £65 tamron 55-200mm, into a £170 lens!
Making all your new vertical grips sony only proprietary batteries only
For overcharging for the lithium battery
Not using the Minolta battery
Making their 50mm f1.4 the most expensive out of all 4 makers
For increasing prices on lenses more than 20% over KM
For not giving users enough choice on jpeg NR
Making their new lower end A camera VG's twice the price of rivals

For jacking up the price of the 56 flash to more than either the C&N flashes in the UK

Introducing "SURE" to really kill all those good deals for USA folks! (oh yeah, you just love the new flash price eh??..he he)
For making the CZ 16-80mm so hit and miss QC wise, and so expensive!
For making Ken's life so much fun
For setting up a sony blog, to ignore user requests!
Holding onto MS, when nobody else uses it
For making the A300/350 viewfinders, "worst in class"

For dumping the unique dual dials..and using fisher price buttons on the top plate

Having the worst PR record in the industry, the minds behind rootkits, and dead goat bad taste ads

And the good

The A200 is cheap! yay...

Good idea
In reply to cgarrard, Jun 29, 2008

I have a some what irrational dislike of huge multinational giants, like microsoft, walmart, sony, etc.

I also did not like the root kit debacle, although Sony did back off under public presssure.

Things I like about Sony: They have never been afraid to push the envelope. I have owned the 717, 828 and R1. They were all very innovative good products. Not perfect, but very interesting good products. They still push the envelop in their products. The A700 and 350 are very interesting, offering much inovation for good price.

The Sony camera division is really a seperate entity, part of sony, but not "all" of sony. I don't really blame the camera division for the root kit mess.

I didnt stick with sony when I went dslr, but that was because at the time it was very limited.

Today, Sony has come a long way in a short time. Is some of heir glass expensive? yes. Is there IQ just a little behind Canikon? Maybe a small amount. But considering where they came frrom they have made big strides, and when they bring out the A900, they are going to get LOTS of attention. Will it be all positive, no, but the majority of it will probably be positive.

Are you happy with your cameras?

Yes? Well get on with taking pictures and swapping tips with your fellow Sony enthusiasts and ignore eveyone else.

The A100 was the cheapest 10Mp DSLR when it launched. And it sold
very well the first weeks, until the Canikon 10Mp models were out.

For not offering users a new 50mm f1.7

This makes sense. It's only half a stop between it and the 1.4 and
there are too many 1.7s out there that would compete price wise.

For not giving us 300/400mm f4 primes

I think a 400/4 would cost more that you would like to pay. Even if
Canon made it. Canon's 400/5.6 must be around £800 and
one that's a stop faster, would be twice that, I bet. And someone
with a smaller market share would have to ask more since the fixed
costs are spread over fewer lenses.

Not using the Minolta battery

Other makers also introduce new batteries. The 450D, D40, E-400, L10,
K10D all had different batteries than the earlier models. The K10D/20D use
the Minolta batteries though, don't they?

[long list deleted]

Yet you forgot about the features disabled on the new Alphas,
like MLU.
