Nice shot.
In reply to cboudier, Jun 1, 2008

Pretty neat shot.

What's the name of that phenomena with the "fog" around the plane? I've seen that in a pic or two floating around the net.

Not idea :-/
but it last only about 0.1sec !
The plane made a wonderful acceleration and this phenomena appeared.

Fortunately, I was ready and able to shoot : first pic blurred, second is here

Thank you for your comments

Great timing, isn't that when it breaks throught the sound barrier?

Sonic BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! :D
In reply to cboudier, Jun 1, 2008

Wow cool! I don't know my planes well enough but that to me looks like a sonic boom! :D... (yeah, kind of like what Guile's special move is based on :-P... for those that don't know Guile, look up Street Fighter II :D).

That's basically when the plane or whatever moves faster than the speed of sound.

Did you wait to catch that? Or? Really nice :).

Don't know the name, other than condensation. The physics go somewhat like this: During the manoeuvre a vacuum is created above the wing. Due to adiabatic expansion of the air the air temperature drops. Invisible water vapour that is present in the air condensates when the temperature drops below the dew point. What you are seeing are water droplets, fog. Soon thereafter surrounding air moves in, raising pressure and raising temperature so the fog evaporates.

Hmm, could be caused by crossing the sound barrier. Did the photographer hear a sonic boom?

Thank you for this complete explanation.

To all : No, No sound, no boom, just speeeeeeed !
(BTW : in french, we you hear this big boom, it's called the sound's wall)
It was just finishing raining, may be this can explain this ?

I was at the Airshow, that's all.
Exhibitions are often close to the ground, it's easier for photographer

And in this particular case, it's mainly... luck (I mean exceptional skills of course

Not a sonic boom at all. the wing creates pressure differentials and under humid conditions the vapor is formed. You can see passenger planes do this all the time, especially at rotation. Heres an example.

Sudden fog formation
In reply to albapete, Jun 2, 2008

Congratulations on capturing this rare event so well !

I've seen fog appear and disappear within seconds at very low pressure changes.

I was scuba diving and had my head in a very small cave, a few metres below the surface, which had air trapped in it.

Every time a wave would come over, the water level would rise a few cm and the fog would form, then the water level would drop and the fog would disappear !!!

As the air was trapped over water, the air was saturated with moisture, just like after rain.

True true :). Heheh... after seeing the pic, I stopped thinking about airshows haha. Probably because I had seen pics of planes going at supersonic speeds and creating those before (circular forms which don't last long). But yeah, thanks for the explanation :).

Again, great shot. Luck or no luck, thanks for sharing ;).
