The original explanation of [Flash] and [Shortcut] in the FAQ is
incorrect, because it leads to inadvetant activation of the
original Shortcut functionality.

I don't have a S3, but I have tried to included this into the Wiki. Please correct the wiki if I understood something wrong or made a mistake:

Re: Canon uploader question for S3

My card reader was toasted this weekend. I was trying to uplpad the
files for the HDK via UPLOADER. While reading the instructions, it
says ""Could be used to upload PS_A610.FIR files to the root of SD
card (if you don't have a card reader)"" Does that means that it
is meant for A610 or can i use it for S3 as well.

I tried it with my A610, but I think it would be usable for the S3, too.
Some observations:

  • It does not work with write protected cards, so you have to remove your card and unlock it before.

  • Put your firmware files into the same directory as the uploader.

  • There is a textfile named "FirmInfo.txt". This text file contains this text: "[Firmware File Name]". Just change the name below it into the filename you want to upload. Then save the text file and start the UploadFirmware.exe. You have to do this two times: 1x for "PS.FIR" and 1x for "DISKBOOT.BIN".

-> It worked for me and my A610, and I think it will work for other cams, too. But I find it more convenient to use a card reader. It is advisable to use a cheap one, because it hopefully will not have a sensor for the write proctection switch of the card, meaning you will also be able to write and delete protected cards with it, which is nice if you use the autostart feature of the CHDK firmware.

addition:

If you want to use the uploader with another cam than the A610, you probably also have to change the text "[Camera Model Name(s)] Canon PowerShot A610" into the appropriate name. I have no experience with this, though.
If you give it a try, let me know how it worked out.

unfortunately it did not worked out...it says that " fimware upgrade is not inteded for the connected camera"... I tried to edit on the text file the type of the camera as well but nothing came out. At last I replaced the two files that come with the uploader of the A610 with the same files I have in my computer for my S3 but the uploader crashed.

Any advice?

thanks

John

Since this thread after 4 days has nearly reached its limit of 150 posts again (I wish they would change that!), I created a sequel here:

Which two files?
My Uploader came with a couple of them:
CDPTPCLS.dll
EWatch.exe
FirmInfo.txt
IWrap.dll
Reame.txt
UploadFirmware.exe

Have you looked on the Canon internet page? Perhaps they have an uploader specifically for the S3.

Okay. If you also have tried to modify the FirmInfo.txt and it did not work, I am out of ideas.
I think you might need to buy a new card reader...
I will update the Wiki that the uploader only works with the A610.
