Aurora Alert: Sept 14-15, 2005

Space Weather News for Sept. 14, 2004
http://spaceweather.com

Sunspot 798/808 flared twice more yesterday, and at least one of the X-class explosions propelled a coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth. NOAA forecasters estimate a 70% chance of severe geomagnetic activity when the CME arrives--perhaps tonight, Sept. 14-15. Sky watchers at all latitudes should be alert for auroras.

Observing tips: Although auroras are sometimes bright enough to shine through city lights, you'll see more from a dark-sky site in the countryside. The best time to look is usually during the hours around local midnight.

Thanks for the 'heads-up'. Sadly, tonights forcast here in SW NH is for partly to mostly cloudy with a chance of showers. Then all the way thru to Friday night its cloudy and showers likely. I live in the country far from 'lights' but aurora here are kind of rare at this latitude 42°.77" generally. Even though great ones are viewed by others in far greater southern latitudes; for which I'm at a loss to understand.

Sunspot 0808 at Monday and Tuesday sunsets is so large it was visible with the unaided eyes safely thru very thick haze. I sort-of schedule sunset viewing daily so naturally I got some photos with teleconverters.
((( sshhh! and yes, even with dz. But don't tell anyone. sshhh! )))

It's possible in Florida, unlikely but possible. We're in for clouds in the overnight.

Yeah, I doubt it too... but I'll definitely have a look-see tonight. Ophelia is blowing dry air from up north to our state. Has been very dry and the sky has very little/to no clouds.

Has anyone ever taken photos of the "aurora borealis" with the FZ30 or any other FZ?

I managed with my old C5050. Haven't had a good opportunity to do so with a panasonic.
