The eyes have it! A tutorial.

Let's talk about the eyes...

Since so many people have asked how I get the eyes in my paintings looking so good, I thought I would post the tecnique that I use to accomplish this. Use this as a basic guide only. Since every picture is different, you can not expect the settings used for one picture to work with another. With that in mind, let's start...

OK, I chose the same picture in which I originally posted my Smudge tecnique...

I will usually do the eyes last after I'm all done painting. The first thing we want to do is choose the primary color. Here, I sampled the original eye color and chose to go a little lighter. The settings are R-111,G-72,B-37. Now that you've done that create a new blank layer and name it IRIS.

Using Photoshop's standard brushes, choose a soft round brush with an opacity of arround 30% and completely paint over the eye as shown below:

Next, create a new blank layer and name it PUPIL. This time we want to use a Hard Round brush. Using an opacity of arround 95% size the brush within the iris and give it one click to paint a perfect black pupil as shown here...

Ok, now it's time for the glint, or the little white circle, that appears in each eye. Create another blank layer and name it, you guessed it, GLINT. Use a white color and an opacity of arround 85% with the same hard round brush (although soft can be used) and size it and position it accordingly. A good position is either at 10 or 2 o'clock. Like this...

But wait! There's more. To really highlight and bring out the eye, you want to create a little catch light. Create another blank layer and name it CatchLight. Now, using a soft round brush with a very low opacity of arround 15%, paint a half moon shaped line using the same white color. This is placed opposite the glint as shown here...

Now, select your IRIS layer and choose a blending mode of Liniear Dodge. Now, merge all four of these eye layers into one. On this merged eye layer, go to Levels and using the mid tone center slider, lighten it up a bit to arround 1.15. Next and finally, sharpen the eyes a little by using Unsharp Mask. Then flatten image and your done... Here's the final result:

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your generous guidelines, it is very much appreciated.

Are you a painting artist off the computer as well? Just curious, you seem to have a lot of artistic abilities. How did you figure out which brushes to use? There are so many, did you simply try them one by one. You spared all of us from having to do that by giving us your work-flow. Thanks again.

Sue,

Try cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files and restarting your computer and see if that helps.

Thanks for responding Alan ...

I don't normally have any problems seeing the pictures --- but - despite clearing out the Temp Internet Files - & the Cookies - & resetting - I still get the 'dratted-red-cross' ...

It "appears" to go through the motions of DLing the files - (visible in the status bar) - but nothing shows ...

Anyone else got any suggestions (short of me leaving) .. ;-)) ...

Regards ...

I have no idea what's happened - but - I do seem to have a problem ....

I have Broadband - & through this connection - your pictures "don't-show" ..

I also have an emergency Dial-Up - & through this connection - BINGO - I get to see your images ...

So - the problem doesn't appear to be in IE ...

And I don't have any trouble seeing other people's images ...

And I didn't have any trouble seeing some of your other images Alan ..

This is giving me an headache ... ;-)) ...

Regards ...

Any time you get the red cross you can always try;
right click on the red x and choose 'Show Image' from the drop down menu.

It "appears" to go through the motions of DLing the files -
(visible in the status bar) - but nothing shows ...

Wow! Do you also have a "painting tutorial"?
In reply to Alan Buonforte, Aug 22, 2005

Hi Alan,

Great tutorial and great effect. Did you also made a tutorial that shows how to obtain the general painting effect of this image? I made a search in the forum but didn't find anything.

Thanks!
