Got my Jupiter 21m 200mm f/4 lens
Jan 19, 2005

Finally, today the postal service delivered my Jupiter 21m 200mm f4 M42
mount lens that was shipped from Russia on 9th Dec'04!!! Cost me $45
and $15 in shipping from Russia to India for this 1Kg lens.

Funnily, the customs department sent me a notice regarding the used
Sirius 28mm f/2.8 M42 mount lens I bought off eBay for GBP2.99 and let
the Jupiter thru without any hassles!! The ways of the government are
definitely mysterious

The Jupiter is well built, focus ring is smooth and has a built-in
hood. Turning the aperture ring rattles the innards of the lens a bit
making a clunk sound but for $45 who's complaining

Although I don't have any other lens in the 200mm range to compare it
with but took some test shots with my Canon 300D of Norman Koren's test
charts and the lens seems usable from f/5.6 onwards. Maybe I will post
some comparison shots when I receive my Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DO Macro
II next month.

Looking forward to lugging it to the short three day vacation I am off
to this weekend.

One thing that's niggling me though is that is the Canon 300D mount
strong enough to take this 1kg weight because the lens has no tripod
collar? Can I get one third-party tripod collar for it?

Thanks,

  • Siddhartha

Got any pics?

I wouldn't make a habit of mounting it from the camera body, but if you're careful not to torque the mount I think you'll be fine.

Got it when I was in the office. Was late by the time I came home so couldn't shoot anything. Maybe over the weekend Will definitely post.

Yep, will keep that in mind. I make it a point to hold the lens with my left hand when I am using only one hand to hold the camera. Still like to know whats the heaviest lens people use on the 300D without a tripod.

I wish I spent as much time taking photos as I do on here
but I'm better at remembering lens specifications than I am at capturing images.

I'm pretty sure it's the EF 400 f/2.8L IS USM (+ EF 1.4x). About 5.4 kg, or just shy of 12 lbs.

Citylights you really brought back that feeling of "WoW!" to my choice to get the XT. This little camera has so much to offer and seeing that lens mounted is just the example people on teh fence need to see.

Almost endless possabilities.

Blast from the past!
In reply to infini, Jun 13, 2006

I had not seen that post for a while. It still gives me that WOW, feeling. I remember at the time people were debating endlessly the cheap plastic feel of the 300D and how long it would last.

My 300D still looks like the day I purchased it, only 15,000 pictures later. I am not wracking up so much more on it now that I am shooting with an XT.

Almost endless possabilities.

I totally agree.

Another, showing that the size of the camera body really doesn't make much of a difference. That 1-series camera looks just as much like a toy as the 350D does.
