After many obsessive months of lurking in these forums, downloading and printing way too many samples, reading reviews, and of course waiting... I just can't seem to make a decision on this one. Trying to be patient while the dust settle's a little more but I'm tired of shopping and I want a camera!!
After much examination, to me image quality is acceptable from both. I am more interested in buying the camera that will function the most reliably. I have narrowed it down to these deciding criteria. 1) Low Light AF: 7i appears to be the winner here which could be the tie breaker for me. The low light EVF feature on the 7i also sounds enticing. Not that I plan on using the camera much by candlelight, but if AF is not reliable for typical indoor lighting situations I will not be happy. This is really my only main concern with the S602. 2) Battery Usage: S602 is the clear winner here. I am particuarly impressed by reports that it can run for 2-3 days on a set of standard alkalines. The 7i on the other hand, sounds workable but something you definitely have to plan for and keep a freshly charged set of NiMH's handy. Not a deal killer but certainly a nuissance. 3) Price: S602 is around $100-$150 cheaper after you throw in a charger. Is the 7i worth the extra? Maybe... As for longevity, the 7i probably has the upper hand with it's upgradable firmware. I must admit that I am very impressed with Minolta's commitment in providing fixes/upgrades to the 7. 4) Still worried about the exposure and contrast issues often mentioned with the 7/7i. Again workable, but not ideal. Hmmm... S602 sometimes misses AF, 7i sometimes misses AE. Pick your poison.
Any experiences, opinions, or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Fred
