ShowJumping and Dressage Photo tips?

Hi there, I have an event coming up that I have to shoot. Two days of Showjumping and Dressage.(Their Photorapher jammed out on them!) I do mostly Running, Biking and Adventure Racing Photography,so this is new to me. I use a Canon 10d and 100-400L lens as well as a Tamron 28-75 XR DI. This looks to be a fairly difficult event to shoot. It is outside and the contrast between Horses and riders makes for tough exposures.(Would I be better to go with the partial metering as opposed to Evaluative Metering) From what I've been told the best shots are as the horse goes up for the jump, rather than on the way down.(Getting this moment right seems an art in it's self!) I would be interested in hearing from anyone who does this type of photography.

Thanks,
Autie.
