Miniature motorsport pics

Hi.
On the weekend I tried out my new D70 by taking some pics at a radio-controlled car race meet. I've tried this before with my Coolpix 995 and WOW, what a difference the D70 makes. The shutter delay is magnificant, the buffer is great. I'm still having troubles with focus though because they approach so fast and with the kit lens I was taking photo's of something moving about 50km/h less than 2m away. Check them out:

I can't wait to add a Sigma 70-300 and get a bit further back from the edge of the track. That also means I'll be hit by stones less!
Let me know what you think. Has anyone else tried shots like this with the D70? I'd love to discuss technique in more detail.
Cheers,
Mark.
