G5/G3 manual focus

I have been using manual focus on a few photos lately, but find it very hard to use on my G5. The area magnifies, but the monitor isn't sharp enough for me to really "fine tune" the focus. I just do focus lock, push manual and then "set" to fine focus. Anyone else have any better ways to use manual focus. It doesn't seem the greatest operation. Would love suggestions.
