voice memo on demand for A1/A2 ?

As far as I can tell the voice memo feature of the A1/A2 is an all or nothing proposition. If it is on, you are prompted to leave a voice memo after each photo. If you have nothing interesting to say about the photo, you have to remember to stop the recorder.
I would like to use the voice memo as a replacement for my field notes. But I really don't make notes for every frame that is shot. Usually there's a general note per location regarding the special lighting conditions, experimental settings, street address, etc. That note applies to the next 5-20 shots.
I would like a simple way to insert a voice memo on demand. The best that I can do is to leave voice memo off most of the time. Then when leaving a note, enter menu-> page2-> inst playback(on), voice memo(on). Then take a shot, then go through all of the menu gyrations to turn instant playback off.
That's 21 button pushes to record one memo ! I'm almost inclined to leave the memo as a video memo because a switch to video and back is so fewer button clicks.
I'm hoping that there's an easier way. Does anyone have a better suggestion ?
Thanks,
Bart
