Birth of a cicada (pics)
May 14, 2004

After a 17 year wait, I finally found some cicadas to photograph! They emerge from the ground at night and I spent a few hours this evening photographing the progression from larval stage to full blow cicadahood. Below are six images showing parts of the birth process. All were taken with a Micro Nikkor 55mm 2.8 lens and the internal flash with diffuser. They have been cropped, reduced in size and saved in high compression JPG in order to keep the files small. Eventually I'll post an many more and much higher quality images in an online gallery. Hope you enjoy them.

Larval stage cicada after emerging from the ground.

The larva secures itself to a surface and the cicada begins to emerge.

The cicada almost fully emerged. Note the yellow wings folded up.

The cicada hanging from its larval shell as its wings unfold.

The wings are fully unfolded and turn transparent as they dry.
