To heck with e-TTL.....

I went ahead and purchased the old classic Vivitar 285HV.

The Canon had many advantages but for the price it could at least offer manual control and an accurate zoom factor for the Digital Rebel. For example: when zooming out to 55mm, the real focal length is about 88mm. Yet the Canon 420ex flash would only zoom out to 50mm, which cut its effectiveness. So I returned the 420. The Vivitar is super flexible at less than half the price of the canon.

When I used to photograph professionally, I used Vivitar flashes, including the 283 and I never felt I needed TTL flash exposure. Of course, it didn't really exist back then.
