Sunpak 522 - Questions

I have a Sunpak 522 flash that my father used with his old Canon A1 Program. I have a Digital Rebel/300D, and am wondering if I can connect the flash directly to the camera. I do have a Remote Sensor for the flash, which is designed for the Canon A1, but I'm not sure if the voltages are compatable.
Another question along the same lines, do you have to worry about the voltages if you use a PC cord and a camera hot shoe/PC cord adapter? The Sunpak also has a PC jack that I could use. Any information would be greatly appreciated. With no in-camera FEC, and no adjustments on my 420EX, the Sunpak would allow me some flexibility.
