Yes, you can use your 300D and Hoya R72 to take IR photos. You'll need a shutter speed of about 8-20 seconds, at f/8.0, depending on the light conditions. The images will come out with a strong magenta cast, requiring that you...

1 - Adjust the white balance in Photoshop/CaptureOne, and

2 - Do a channel swap (Image - Adjust - Channel Mixer - Red channel - R:0 G:0 B:100, Blue Channel - R:100 G:0 B:0)
