ETTL. do you share my thoughts?

After some experience with the 10D plus 550EX, I have found ETTL quite accurate while FEL on selected targets (mainly people's faces).
But when FEL is not possible, I have found the outcome more erratic, perhaps due to the way ETTL measures flash exposure around active focus points.
Wouldn't it be nice if ETTL is improved (thru a custom function, maybe) so the user can force flash exposure metering to follow the ambient light metering method chosed?
Do you think this will be an improvement? Is there any fundamental obstacle to implement it?
