ETTL vs Rocket Science

Back in 1972 I put my Vivitar flash on my Konica T 35 mm SLR and took flash pictures. Amazingly, the vast majority of time, they came out exposed very well with little thought.

Now, 32 years later, I feel like I have to be a rocket scientist to determine how to get a good exposure with my 10D and my 550 flash.

The system works one way in "P", another way in "Tv", still another way in "Av" still another way in FEL, another way with custom setting 4, or is it custom setting 13, or do I mean in hi speed flash mode? Or maybe I forgot to "drag" the shutter.

I understand that this sophisticated equipment gives lots of control and choices, but I feel that somehow the ETTL flash part of the system is much more confusing then perhaps it needs to be.
