Photo Labs vs. Inkjet printing ?

I was wondering if it was better to go and get my digital photo's developed at kodak or a fuji frontier lab rather than buying a decent printer nd printing from home. Photo labs are kind of expensive (In australia one store was charing $2 AUSTRLIAN DOLLARS for one 4x6" picture) so would buying a printer be cheaper in the long run?
