slightly OT: decent film camera to compliment lenses

I am looking to spend around $300 for my father for Christmas, and I know he used to love taking pictures back in the day. He is not ready for digital just yet, so I was wanting to get him an older Canon film camera with a starter normal zoom lens. I am thinking used is the way to go, as it allows me to get a good amount more for the money, and I really enjoy finding a really good deal, as I just found a completely mint 50/1.8 mk1 for my brother in law for $45. He was completely floored. I know that kind of a find is rare, and there are no photo shows in sight near me. So I will have to settle for what ebay can provide.
What would you recommend?
Thanks,
